INCIDENT IN GRANTON AREA, EDINBURGH:
On April 11 2011, a very severe fire started in a first floor flat on Wardrobe Street West, resulting in the death of Julie Fergus due to serious burns. According to reports, the fire broke out around 5 pm. A number of calls were made to the firefighters from the anxious members of the public. When the fire crew arrived, they found the property well on fire. Miss Julie Fergus was rescued using breathing equipment and was immediately taken to the hospital. She died a short time after she was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Luckily, no one else was injured in the incident. More than 15 firefighters dealt with the fire which was at its height. The firefighters had to take force entry into neighboring flats to ensure that the blaze had not spread.
INCIDENT IN HAZELBANK TERRACE:
On 31st August 2011 fire broke out in a ground floor flat in Hazel bank Terrace around 5:20. The fire spread through neighboring flats into the roof. Due to the narrow streets and the historic nature of the area it was difficult to control the ongoing fire. All the neighboring properties were evacuated and the roads had to be closed. According to reports there were no injuries. Around forty firefighters were involved in putting out the fire and it took them more than seven hours to achieve this mission. The fire was finally extinguished around 14:30.
INCIDENT IN PIERSHILL SQUARE:
A blaze broke out around 10:20pm in Pier shill Square East. Around twenty firefighters were called to the scene. Its appeared as if the fire had started in the bedroom of the property. Moreover the common stairs in the tenement building was immediately filled with smoke resulting in neighbors evacuating their building. A 37 year old man suffered superficial burns on his hands and neck and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Another 34 year old male amongst the neighbors suffered from smoke inhalation and was treated by the paramedics at the scene of blaze.
INCIDENT IN RANKIELLOR STREET:
On 12th January 2011, firefighters were called around 11pm to the flats in Rankine Street. The fire had started in the basement area. However when the firefighters arrived at the scene the fire had spread to a flat next door and also to properties in Clerk Street. More then forty firefighters tackled this blaze. All the surrounding properties were evacuated. Still there had been a few injuries. About ten people were treated at the scene, while two had to be taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary who was suffering from smoke inhalation. Eight people managed to escape themselves while a 12 year old child and three adults were saved by firefighters using a ladder.
