Flea Problems In Cats And Dogs

It is an unfortunate state of affairs, but our beloved pets often bring us small gifts that we could just do without

. Because they are usually off somewhere snuffling through the undergrowth and greeting other like-minded animals, they often bring home a flea or two which starts a big problem for us. For example, these blood sucking little insects will feed on anything with warm blood, and that includes us too!

The adult female flea can lay up to eighteen eggs per day for all of her life. It only takes about twenty fleas on a pet to produce two thousand eggs per week! Imagine then if the pet population is large and see how many new fleas will be lining up to bite the unfortunate owner when they themselves need to start laying their own eggs!

People normally notice when the family dog starts to look uncomfortable trying to reach places on its back to give it a good scratch. Once this happens then it is surely time to get into action to make the environment as unfriendly as possible for the burgeoning infestation.

First, all of the toys that the animal loves to play with should be picked up and washed, along with any bedding that they use too. Floors and rugs should be vacuumed regularly to pick up any loose eggs and fleas which have jumped off the host. A great tip here is to put a flea collar in the vacuum bag so that any live fleas sucked up will be killed off immediately.

All boxes or stuff stored under beds should be removed and the place given a thorough clean so that nothing is missed. Again, if storing clothing or anything like this, pop in a flea collar or two just to be on the safe side.

Floors have to be brushed and washed, including those concrete floors in garages or where pets are known to frequent. This stops the odd egg or flea from jumping onto the next passerby to start its life all over again.

Once any debris and piled up boxes have been removed from the house and outside areas, it is time to get the place treated. Pets have to be taken off somewhere and any fish tanks must be covered with damp clothes and air pumps turned off so that they do not suck in the chemicals to the water.

Once the house has been prepared, it could be better to call in the experts so that they can give the house a thorough spraying. People and pets alike will not really be welcome here for several hours until the spray dries off so try to make this on a day when other activities are taking place.

Finally, on this same day, arrange to have the pets sorted out at the local veterinarian so that they do not bring anything back with them. Indeed, after this it may also be a good idea for them to wear on animal treatment collars to stop further infestation.
