Fleas, Ticks, And Bed Bugs--oh My!

Wall louse, mahogany flat, crimson rambler, heavy dragoon

, chinche, redcoat--the names are many, but the insect is the same: the infamous bed bug. Bed bugs, like fleas and ticks, are critters that feed on the blood of mammals.

Bites from bed bugs can become inflamed just like other insect attacks, and serious sensitivity to the insects' saliva can lead to health problems, including anaphylactic shock (though, of course, this is rare).

That is why, when you notice any signs that there may insects creeping around your home, it is important to call an exterminator.

Fortunately, common bed bugs are unlikely to spread other diseases through feeding on human hosts, but that doesn't give you much peace of mind if it's too difficult to distinguish what type of infestation you may have on your hands. So here are some signs to help you indicate to the exterminator what they're up against.

Fleas and bed bugs tend to infest generally the same places in the home--beds, couches, and other warm, cozy places that humans and animals alike tend to hang out. The major difference is that fleas are found in a lot more places, especially the carpet.

The way the infestation begins can be drastically different, however. Fleas are generally brought in from outdoors by pets, while bed bugs can hitch a ride with you on public transportation or be brought in from an infested piece of clothing or furniture. Fleas also have the capability to jump great distances--a talent bed bugs don't share.

Both fleas and bed bugs can bite without being detected because they both tend to bite during the night while you're asleep. However, if you do see the little boogers, you will notice there is difference in their size and color. Bed bugs, NYC or LA or Chicago or Walla Walla or anywhere they live, are typically light to dark brown in color, but the younger the bug, the lighter the color.

Ticks are not, in fact, insects; instead, they are classified as arachnids, like spiders are. Ticks are not quite so picky about whose blood they will ingest. They are known to feed off mammals, birds, and even reptiles.

The types of ticks that make their way into human homes are generally easy to see, at least in comparison to fleas and bed bugs, particularly after they have been feeding. Ticks are extremely dangerous and are known to spread all kinds diseases, some of which can be chronic for humans and pets alike.

Again, if you spot any of these little creepy-crawlies in your home, you need to call an exterminator that specializes in elimination of that type of infestation right away.
