Fleur-de-lis Story
One symbol that is very familiar to most people in the world is the fleur-de-lis
. The word fleur-de-lis literally means the flower of lily. It can be seen on flags, coats of arms and official insignias, clothing, handbags, key chains, postage stamps, and fashion jewelry. But as much as people are familiar with it, few are really aware of the symbolism behind it.
One can see the fleur-de-lis symbol on flags and European coats of arms
throughout history representing their respective monarchies like in France and Spain. In France, it is supposed that the three leaves represent the three classes of the French people at that time: the workers, the soldiers, and the pious. There are, of course, many other interpretations of it, like the Church taking the three petals to represent the Holy Trinity and the lily representing the Virgin Mary. It also supposedly represents purity and perfection. The French symbolism of the fleur-de-lis was carried all the way to North America,
especially to the French speaking settlements like Quebec in Canada and New Orleans in the United States. But for many young people, their first contact with the symbol is usually as scouts, as the fleur-de-lis is also being used as the World Scout Emblem, maintaining it as a symbol for giving direction.
In the United States, the symbol of fleur-de-lis came into the forefront again when the Louisiana governor signed a bill making it as the official symbol of the State of Louisiana after it was hit by the devastating hurricane Katrina in 2008. The symbol was also widely used in the relief and recovery efforts in New Orleans during that period.
With all that history and symbolism, the fleur-de-lis has also taken a visible space in todays fashion world, especially in clothing, jewelry, and accessories. More and more women can now be seen with fleur-de-lis symbols dangling from their ears, hanging on their necks, and even sparkling on their fingers.
It is amazing how certain traditions tango together with the days fashion and in a way upholding the values of the ancient days.
