Flexible Welding Cable Has 34 Awg Copper Strands
There are two types of welding cable that have different amounts of flexibility due to the size of the copper strands
. More flexible cables come with smaller gauge copper strands which can bend and twist much easier than thick copper strands. However, when engineers make the gauge smaller they need to include more strands in the cable in order to approve the same amount of current that will travel through it.
Standard welding cable has 30 AWG copper strands and it lacks the UL, CSA and MSHA approvals. Many homeowners use standard welding cable in order to hook up a welder or use it as a single conductor power cord for applications less than 600 volts. It also comes with a tough rubber EPDM insulation thats built to withstand being dragged across garages and being run over by vehicles. It comes standard in black or red insulation with a temperature range reaching 90C.
Flexible welding cable is also known as Super Vu-Tron cable which is a brand name of General Cable. They make it with 34 gauge strands and all of the UL, CSA and MSHA approvals needed to use this type of electrical cable in industrial applications that will be fully inspected. Since its used in more commercial type installations the jacket is engineered much stronger, more durable and in the color orange for safety.
Using a standard welding cable for an industrial application will minimize the lifetime of the cable set by the manufacturer. Using a Super Vu-Tron cable will allow for much more abuse from day to day which you can imagine if you picture a typical industrial job site compared to a home owners garage.
Why arent all cables flexible if its beneficial?
A flexible cable is more expensive to manufacture because of the small copper strands and more flexible rubber insulation. Less flexible cables such as THHN electrical wire are manufactured that way on purpose for contractors and installers because they push it through conduit and snake it through walls. A stiff cable in those circumstances will create a much quicker installation because the wire wont get bunched up along the way.
All applications are different and require different approvals, temperature ratings, voltage ratings and ampere ratings depending on what they are delivering power to. Many single conductor power cables such as flexible welding cable are rated for 600 volts and 90C but there are many requirements and manufacturers are already on top of it. Speak to your supplier about the type of cable you need to make sure youre not over spending for what you actually need.
