Flight Instruction: What You Should Look For
One of the most invigorating adventures that you can have is to fly an airplane
. Getting there, though, requires many hours of practice and training. Because there are so many flight schools out there, you will need to choose the flight instruction that meets your individual needs. And with the prices of getting a license so high, it is not a decision that can be taken lightly.
Before getting too deep, you should start with the basics. Make a list of all the flight schools that are available in your local area. Do some research online and by calling them to find out basic information about them such as their curriculum, reviews, reputation, procedures, and even safety record.
When you have picked out a few schools, schedule yourself for a tour. Ask questions about anything that concerns you, particularly information that you were not able to find answers for while doing research. Ensure that you see everything you want to see and if you have the chance, ask other students about their experiences, how they like it, and if they have had any problems.
Inquire about their teaching methods during the ground school. Some schools use videos and are self-paced while other schools provide classes that follow to a strict agenda. Other teaching methods also include using self-taught computer training. You will have to figure out which kind of training is best for you.
After that, it is a good idea to interview the instructors. Do not ever hesitate to ask questions about anything. Some things you will want to ask about are their background and experience. Schedule an orientation flight with an instructor that you like to make sure you connect and you are alright with their teaching methods and personality.
Another factor that you will need to consider is the type and number of training aircraft that are available. You will need to determine if prefer flying high-wing or low-wing aircraft. Also, it is important to know how well maintained the aircraft are and how many students use each aircraft. A typical school will have one aircraft for every four or five students. If it gets too much higher than that, you may have to compete for flight time.
Probably the most important factor about getting a license is cost. It can be expensive if you don't do your research, so ask how much the typical student spends on their license. Also query about their rates for aircraft rental, instructor time, and fuel prices. The good news is that the majority of students pay as they learn. All expenses are not due up front.
The ultimate decision has to be made by you depending on the type of training that you desire based on what you can afford, your learning style, and what you expect from your instructors. Flying is one of the most amazing things that you can do, but getting there will require that you pick the best flight instruction for you.
