This November 2010, air news article has reports on new developments on Boeing 787 Dreamliner, helicopters and Sikorsky aircrafts as follows,
Boeing Studies R-R Plans Aimed At Avoiding More Delays
Boeing is studying plans from Rolls-Royce aimed at avoiding further delays to the 787 Dream liner following the blowout of an engine in testing recently, and these proposed steps should allow the aircraft to enter service as planned early next year.
Boeing delayed the 787s first delivery for the sixth time on August 27 when Rolls-Royce apparently indicated that it could not supply an engine in time to finish flight testing on schedule.
Rolls-Royce competes with General Electric to produce engines for the Dream liner, which is running almost three years behind schedule because of problems with the new manufacturing system and materials used. The 787 is the first airliner with a fuselage and wings made of composites instead of aluminum.
Boeing withdrew one of five Dream liner test aircraft from the test program me recently in order ro replace one of its two Rolls-Royce engines following a power surge before takeoff. The problem has subsequently been solved and is unrelated to the engine blowout. A sixth 787 has now joined the test program me.
Following the blowout of the $ 17-million Trent 1000, Rolls-Royce was forced to close the test bed in Derby, England, for repairs. The site is also used to trail engines for Airbus rival A350 model.
Meanwhile, Boeing has begun fatigue testing on the structural airframe of the 787 Dream liner which involves placing the 787 test airframe into a test rig that simulates multiple lifecycles to examine how the aircraft responds over time.
Unlike static tests, where loads are applied to the aircraft structure to simulate both normal operation and extreme flight conditions, fatigue testing is a much longer process that simulates up to three times the number of flight cycles an aircraft is likely to experience during a lifetime of service.
Although the structural test program me already has validated the strength of the airframe, fatigue testing looks at long term, continued use. This is the natural progression of testing on a new aircraft and is part of the process to achieve US Federal Aviation Administration certification.
In other news, our Miami bureau reports that Boeing has extended a year-long delivery delay for its newest 747 jet by six months as engineers redesign some parts and said it would add a fifth' plane to the test fleet to speed up the work.
The postponement to mid-2011 is not expected to have a material impact on Boeings 2010 earnings. The fifth variant of the 40-year-old jumbo jet stretches the iconic hump on top and features new engines and the longest wing Boeing has ever built.
The new design forced engineers to make more changes than the company expected.
UTair Aviation Signs Major Contract with Eurocopter Vostk
Russia's UTAIR will acquire 20 AS350/AS355 light helicopters in a new agreement that extends this leading rotary-wing aircraft operator's long-term strategic relationship with Euro copter.
The acquisition contract covers the deliveries of 20 single-engine AS350 B3 and twin-engine AS355 NP versions of Euro copters Ecureuil lightweight helicopter family beginning in the summer of 2011 and continuing through the spring of 2013.
This is the largest Russian order in the lightweight helicopter category, according to Euro copter executive vice President Christian Gras."The implementation of this program me illustrates a new level of partnership between our two organizations, and inaugurates a new era for the commercial use of Euro copter single engine helicopters in Russia," he added.
UTair has been operating Euro copter single engine helicopters since 2006. Its fleet currently includes Euro copter AS350B3s, AS355Ns and B0105s.
The company also is a launch customer for Euro copters EC175, with the intention to order 15 of these medium-weight twin-engine helicopters, plus 15 options.
Giddy-Up For Lower Fares
If the various indignities of modern airline travel have not been enough to push some disgruntled passengers toward private aviation or the road, the Sky Rider just might.
Italian airliner seat manufacturer, Aviointeriors, introduced a saddle-shaped design at the recent Aircraft Interiors EXPO in Long Beach, California.
It says the seats can be installed in just 23 inches per seat.
The base of the seat is form-fitting, with depressions for the legs that will naturally pitch them forward in what appears to be an attempt to minimize necessary leg room.
The result is a half-standing/half-sitting posture, but designer Gaeta no perugini admitted it was not the standing room that some budget carriers had suggested."Even though the (distance between seats) is extremely narrow, we are talking about seats, not about passengers simply standing on the floor," he said."You are sitting on a special seat, but it is a seat."
Aviointeriors CEO, Dominique Menoud, said the seats would be as comfortable as a cowboy's saddle and he apparently wasn't kidding.
"The seat is like a saddle. Cowboys ride eight hours on their horses during the day and still feel comfortable in the saddle," he explained.
Menoud said he envisioned airlines setting aside separate sections of aircraft with the extra-close seating for those willing to sacrifice room for a cheaper fare on flights of up to three hours. He added that he had already seen interest from some unidentified US carriers and if he received some commitments he would seek certification.
Sikorsky x2 Technology Demonstrator Achieves 250-Knot Speed Milestone.
Sikorsky aircrafts X2 Technology demonstrator has successfully achieved a speed of 250 knots true air speed in level flight at the Sikorsky Development Flight Centre, accomplishing the programmes ultimate speed milestone.
The speed, reached during a 1, 1 hour flight, is an unofficial speed record for a helicopter. The demonstrator also reached 260 knots in a very shallow dive during the flight.
"The aerospace industry today has a new horizon," said Sikorsky president Jeffrey P. Pino."The X2 Technology demonstrator continues to prove its potential as a game-changer, and Sikorsky Aircraft is proud to be advancing this innovative technology and to continue our company's pioneering legacy."
"Our primary key performance parameter has been met," said Jim Kagdis, programme manager for Sikorskys advanced programmes."The 250-knot milestone was established as the goal of the demonstrator from its inception. It's exciting to imagine how our customers will use this capability."
Kevin Bredenbeck, Sikorsky's director of flight operations and chief pilot for the company and for its X2 Technology programme, manned the milestone flight.
Bredenbeck said the demonstrator had been performing well, meeting expectations of performing well, meeting expectations of performance predictions and progressing with every test flight.
"I'm proud of what the x2 Technology team has accomplished," Bredenbeck said."This was truly a collaborative effort that demanded a tremendous sacrifice from the full team. This dedication enabled the demonstrator to hit this historically high mark."
The X2 Technology demonstrator combines an integrated suite of technologies intended to advance the sate-of-the-art, counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter. It is designed to demonstrate that a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250 knots while retaining such desirable attributes as excellent low-speed handling, efficient hovering, and a seamless and simple transition to high speed.
The X2 Technology program me began in 2005 when Sikorsky first committed resources and full funding for the programmes development.
