Yes. Flip. They create mini video recorders camcorders if you will. So called due to the innovative flip-out USB stick that enables you to plug the video straight into your computer and transfer your movies from the cameras hard drive. Thats right. No tapes, no discs, no memory cards. Just you, the flip and whatever you and your friends and family are getting up to today.

Sounds quite cool, doesnt it? Too right. Flip video camcorders began life as a disposable unit the video version of the disposable camera. These origins explain the compact, pocket size styling and easy to use design. However, the neat, go-anywhere gadget proved too good to throw away and in 2007, the Flip Ultra was launched.

MINI VIDEO GROWS UP

Three years later and the Flip range has expanded and grown up. The early Flip models were fun and incredibly user friendly features reflected in the bright colours and rounded edges used to style the Flip. Early models looked a little like Lego straight forward and robust. Which was just what they were. The next generation though has focused on enhanced performance and even higher quality recording and this move towards the more demanding gadget and geek market has seen Flip smarten up their act with two new models the Flip Ultra II and the Flip HD available in both Ultra HD and Mino HD.

FLIP ULTRA II

The second generation of the hugely successful Flip Ultra, this model sees all the same features and easy-on-the-eye styling. For real high quality captures, you might want to consider the new HD models, but if youre on a budget or just want a simple gadget that does the job, grab an Ultra II for between 70 and 90.

FLIP HD

As the name suggests, the Flip HD models see recording quality improved to high definition standards although its never going to compete with a full-size HD camcorder, at about a fifth of the price, its still exceptional value. The Flip HD is available in two variants the Ultra HD and the smaller (and more expensive) Flip Mino HD.

If you shop on the high street, you may struggle to find the newest Flip video models and youll probably pay over the odds too. As ever, the best deals seem to be had online, but shop around.
