Floating Markets In Bangkok, A Charming Thai Scene

The floating markets of Bangkok have been described as living museums

, portraying a way of life that existed long before the hand of modernization transformed life in Thailand. Villagers still make a living vending their produce in the floating markets. The floating markets gained international renown when Roger Moore as James Bond sped away from villains here in a long-tail boat.

There are in fact several floating markets in Bangkok, but essentially their function is the same. Although today you may see as many tourists as locals at these markets, their quaint charm has survived to the present day.

The visitor will see a multitude of boats on the water, selling produce such as tropical vegetables and fruits, coconut juice fresh from the tree as well as local handicrafts. The canals or klongs that make up the market are filled with flat-bottomed boats often piloted by ladies who will halt and bargain with you at any time. There are also numerous food vendors selling appealing local treats such as various kinds of noodles cooked on the boats themselves. The markets are picturesque, charming and noisy but are always an enjoyable experience for the visitor.

To get to the market, you must take a long-tail boat journey, on which you will see customary teak houses, flourishing orchards and ordinary Thai people carrying out their day-to-day activities. Also en route is Nakorn Pathom town, which features Southeast Asias biggest pagoda.

Damnoen Saduak is probably the best known floating market with its multitude of boat vendors jockeying for position, creating a chaotic yet charming scene. The site of the famous Bond scene, this market never fails to enchant the visitor. Meanwhile the Bang Khu Wiang floating market provides an authentic local experience without excessive numbers of tourists present. In the early morning monks arrive here on their alms round.

The Taling Chan floating market is located very close to Bangkok, and visitors may stay overnight in the nearby villages for a genuine taste of Thai life. Tha Kha floating market is free from excessive commercialization and provides the opportunity to mingle with the locals.

A serviced apartment in Bangkok is the ideal base from which to explore the Thai capital. Somerset Lake Point, an excellent Sukhumvit apartment offers a convenient location and well-furnished rooms, making it ideal for any traveller.
