Flora and Fauna of the Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is Nepal's primary park established in 1973. The park became a popular destination in the country ever since, and in 1984, the park was granted the status of World Heritage Site.

The Chitwan National Park is located in the Churia Hills at the south-central part of Chitwan District. It has an area of 932 square kilometers, with an altitude of 100 meters.

The park is located in an ecologically diverse area which is home to more than 300 endangered species in Asia, such as the one-horned rhinoceros. It also has a vast collection of rare and fascinating Bengal tigers. Apart from the one-horned rhino and rare tigers, Chitwan National Park also has a large variety of plant and wildlife.

Chitwan National Park holds a total of four types of deer which are already rare in other countries in Asia.

You can also find the famous White stockinged gaur which is the largest wild cattle in the world.

The park has animals such as leopard, spotted chital, clouded leopards, sloth bear, grey langur monkey, spotted linsangs, rhesus monkey, Bengal fox, wild dog, wild cats, leopard, wild boar, palm civets and other small animals.

Chitwan National Park hosts marsh crocodiles.

There you can find endangered fish-eating crocodiles and fresh-water dolphins.

The park is also a popular destination for bird-watching. There are 543 species of birds recorded from Chitwan National Park in 2006. Among the rare birds found in the park are hornbills, red-headed Trogons, pintails, waterfowl, Brahminy duck, bare-headed geese and grey-crowned prinia.

Apart from the resident species of birds, there are also 160 other species migrating and arriving in Chitwan during the autumn and winter seasons. When bird-watching during the autumn and winter months, you can find the eastern imperial eagle, greater spotted eagle, ducks and the pallas's fish-eagle. After the winter and as spring arrives, the Indian cuckoos, Bengal pitas and other sunbirds arrive at the park.

Visitors can stay at the Chitwan National Park's lodges which are found inside the park. They offer full board accommodation, plus elephant rides and jeep safaris. Chitwan National Park is not only a place where plants and wild animals are welcome, but also the visitors and tourists that come to see the wonders of this famous Nepal park.
