Florida Tugboat Crewmember Dies after Being Found Unconscious

Investigators are still probing the death of a 45-year-old tugboat crewmember, who was found unconscious in his vessel earlier this week. The man was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead soon after.

The Coast Guard's St. Petersburg sector received an emergency radio call on Monday from the captain of the commercial tugboat, the St. John. The captain claimed that one of his crew members had been found unconscious on the boat. The Coast Guard initiated a rescue effort, including a 33 foot special-purpose boat.

Coast Guard officers immediately transferred the man onto their boat, and began administering CPR to the unconscious man. Efforts to revive him however failed, and the man was then transferred to South Seas Plantation Marina near Captiva Island in Florida. There, more intensified medical efforts were made to revive the man, but these failed too. He was declared deceased soon after.

Investigations into the death are still going on.

There are no indications of foul play here, but in a maritime accident like this, investigators will be looking at just about every angle they can think of. The Coroner's office will likely have some information about the possible cause of the death. This incident is another illustration of the kind of hardship crewmembers face. For the men who toil on the sea, far away from friends and family members, life as a crewmember can be challenging, and often lonely.

Those challenging work conditions have improved significantly over the decades after the passing of the Jones Act in 1920. The Jones Act provided maritime workers with rights and privileges, including the right to hold an employer accountable in case of an injury.

Experienced maritime attorneys represent injured victims of maritime accidents in Texas and nationwide.
