Fluminense could ruin Corinthians centenary

The chances for Corinthians to win the title are few, since they not only need a road win against Goias, but also a loss or tie from the solo leader Fluminense against Guarini that is second to last. And Cruzeiro's chances are even lower, as they need a win and that both of their contenders lose.

If you don't believe that in Brazil soccer is a religion, we invite you to presence the massive congregations of believers that will pack their "temples" this weekend in the final matchday of the 2010 Brasileirao Championship, which has three teams -Fluminense, Corinthians and Cruzeiro- praying and making promises to the sky with their arms held high, waiting for a blessing from above that will let them lift the trophy once the final whistle is blown, to put an end to a breathtaking tournament.

Let's go over each of these three teams' chances to win the title in a championship where 37 matchdays have not been enough to decide a champion, saving the best for last. The competitiveness of the Brazilian League is such that Flamengo -the defending champion- is not even fighting for the top seats this season, and was rather flirting with the last places of the standings that are worth a one way ticket to the Serie B. That competitiveness has also made the 67 points with which Flamengo won the 2009 trophy insufficient this year to be proclaimed as the new champion, where at least 69 points will be needed to win the 2010 title.

The team that is closest to that mark is the solo leader Fluminense with 68 points, who is also the only one of the three that depends solely in their result, and their rival Guarani -18th with 37 points- cant' not be considered as a risk, specially when the Tricolor has the home field advantage on their side. Flu is going through an ironic situation, since last year they saw how their archrival Flamengo won the title while they where struggling to continue in the Serie A, finishing just one point -46- away the 17th place -Coritiba- that would have automatically relegated them to the Serie B. But this year the roles have been inverted, and the only thing that could remain the same is having a Brazilian champion from Rio de Janeiro, which could be the second championship -1984- in Flu's history.

Corinthians is second with 67 points, just one point away from Flu, but that point is magnified when you take a look at the only two scenarios that work for them: they either need a road victory against Goias -19th with 32 points- in combination with a loss or a tie from Flu, or a tie against Goias as long as Flu is defeated by at least two goals difference, and that Cruzeiro doesn't beat Palmeiras. Despite their few options, Timao fans don't lose the faith in their team and pray for a miracle that will allow them to celebrate their centenary in the best way possible: clinching their sixth -1990, 1998, 1999, 2005- Brazilian championship, to tie Sao Paulo and Flamengo as the most recurrent winners.

With less chances of winning the title is Cruzerio and their 66 points depending on a win at home against Palmeiras -10th with 50 points-, and a series of misfortunate events from their rivals: that Flu loses and Timo doesn't win. What could be their second -2003- Brasileirao title doesn't look so easy for Raposa, but as long as they have chances, they will believe until the end.
