Fluvanna Gold Ends Charlottesville's Reign as TJYFL Governors Champions

With 20-19 Thriller to Capture the Crown

Greg Domecq

Although nothing seemed to be going the Gold Flucos way in Sunday evening's TJYFL Governor's Division championship contest against Charlottesville at St. Anne's Bellfield's Turf Field, the 12U team from Fluvanna who found a way to win the regular season championship also managed to find a way to capture the league championship with a thrilling come-from-behind 20-19 victory. To begin with, Fluvanna was facing a Charlottesville Governor's program that had won six consecutive TJYFL Championships; an injury that sidelined one of the team's best runners, Caleb Grimes, with just over 5 minutes left in the third quarter; over 75 yards in penalties; and three touchdowns that were called back by various infractions throughout the game. But even in the face of this adversity, the Fluvanna Gold Team finished an undefeated season and took home all of the championship hardware from the 2010 campaign.

The afternoon did not start well for the Gold Flucos whose initial drive stalled and were forced to punt from their own territory. A bad snap set up the Charlottesville offense at the Fluvanna 30 yard line. It took the Black Knights only two plays to find the end zone as quarterback Tre Duret scampered 22 yards for a touchdown with 5:26 left in the 1st quarter. Duret then tried to find Austin Hawk for the conversion, but the try was no good and Charlottesville kept the lead (6-0) through the end of the initial stanza.

Neither team could get much going in the second quarter. After both teams traded possessions, Fluvanna's scoring machine, Jay Amos, broke a 50 yard run to tie the score with 1:29 left in the half. Caleb Grimes got three tough yards on the PAT and gave the Gold Flucos a precarious 7-6 lead. After a nice kickoff return by Tre Duret, the Flucos were able to snuff out any last second Black Knight heroics when Jameel Wilson intercepted the ball at the Fluvanna 32 to end the half.

The second half started well for the Flucos when the opening kickoff was fumbled by a Black Knight returner and recovered by Fluvanna's Aviyon Anderson. The Gold Flucos methodically drove down the field eating up over 7 minutes culminating with an 8 yard run by Jay Amos. The extra point failed and Fluvanna led 13-6. It did not take long for the Black Knights to respond as Raquarius Cooper weaved his way 34 yards through the Fluvanna defense to the end zone. Lorenzo Lauterback scored the PAT and the game was tied with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

The next possession for the Flucos may have tested the patience of the biblical Job as three touchdown runs were called back and several minor infractions such as illegal motion and delay of game penalties erased big gain after big gain for Fluvanna. After finally turning the ball over on downs, Charlottesville put together an effective drive that ended when Lorenzo Lauterback carried the ball for an 11 yard touchdown run to give the Black Knights a 19-13 lead. On the extra point attempt, Trevor Haislip broke through the line to sack Tre Duret and set up the heart-stopping finish.

After the ensuing kickoff, 54 yards and 5 minutes separated the Flucos from tying the game. After two plays netted negative yardage, Jameel Wilson found the right sideline on a reverse and scampered 40 yards to place the ball in the red zone with 2 minutes left in the contest. After two short gains by running backs Jay Amos and Mark Grooms, the Flucos had their backs against the wall and the clock ticking away. Fluvanna appeared remarkably calm and confident as they handed the ball to Jay Amos who scored his twentieth touchdown of the season to tie the score at 19-19 with 35 seconds remaining. With the Black Knights keying on Amos for the all-important extra point, Coach Ricky Grimes called the inside reverse as quarterback Derek Domecq handed it off to Amos who in turn handed it to Jameel Wilson who followed Domecq's block on Lorenzo Lauterback just inside the pylon and into the end zone.

Domecq, who also serves as Fluvanna's punter and kicker, boomed the kickoff over the Charlottesville backline pinning the Black Knights back to their twenty yard line, After several passes fell harmlessly to the turf, the horn sounded and a new Governors Champion was crowned.

"I am so proud of each and every one of our players and coaches," said head coach Ricky Grimes. "The adversity that our whole organization faced tonight was intense. These players and coaches have come through so much to be where we are tonight. From the first day of practice until the championship game, we have weathered every storm. Not many players can say they have been through a perfect season, but we have twenty-five young men who started in August and finished in November."

Perfection is not a stranger to Fluvanna County TJYFL players. Ten of the members of the 2010 Governors Champion Fluvanna Gold Team (Fergus Hammond, Jacob Garcia, Derek Domecq, Caleb Grimes, Trent Campbell, Shaun Cobb, Camden McDonald, Jarret Krett, Peyton Symmers, and Alex Besecker) were part of a team that went 7 0 in 2009 and won the Founders Division Championship. Five of the current players participated on the 2008 Founders Division Champion that also went 7-0 (Trevor Haislip, Camden McDonald, Jay Amos, Caleb Grimes, and Derek Domecq.) Three players (Derek Domecq, Caleb Grimes, and Camden McDonald) have been on three consecutive undefeated teams who have won 22 straight games and 3 TJYFL Championships. "We have an outstanding group of core players who understand what type of dedication and focus it takes to be a champion not only on the football field but in life as well," concluded Coach Grimes.
