Thus, the need for skilled auditors or tax consultants arises. Tax consultants are sought after by the corporate sector as well as individuals seeking advice on various matters relating to direct and indirect taxes. Auditors on the other hand are required to scrutinize and audit the annual financial statements of an organization to make sure that the records depict the true and fair financial state of the company, for internal as well as external parties.

Tax consultancy or auditing has immense opportunities for an individual with the background of commerce, law or management. To talk about the field of tax consultancy, it has various branches in which specialization can be taken up. One can become a direct tax consultant who deals in income tax & wealth tax or indirect tax consultant. Sales tax, excise and VAT are part of indirect taxes,hence becoming sales tax executives or VAT consultants are good options too.

A chartered accountant (CA) is one professional who is preferred to handle matters related to all kinds of taxation. However, if one is not a qualified CA but has a bachelors degree in commerce or an MBA in finance can also become a tax consultant. There are PG diploma courses that can be pursued like the taxation and regulatory management, certificate course on international taxation

National board on tax consulting also conducts an examination and after clearing it one can become a registered tax consultant. The jobs opportunities in the field are many and lucrative. An individual can join a consultancy firm at a fixed salary. However, if you want to be your own boss, then you can also start your own firm and become an independent tax consultant, however customer prefer a CA for this job.

An individual who wants to be an auditor must have to clear the CA exam conducted by ICAI that has three levels i.e. CPT, IPCC and Final. The CPT can be taken up after Class 12. However, a Bachelors/Masters degree in Commerce or Company Secretary Course or ICWA Course can also help one get internal audit jobs. Auditors can get associated with a CA firm or even start their independent work as an auditor or consultant.
