Washing your clothes or doing your laundry is a necessary skill for everyone

. Unless you have your laundry done by someone, which could cost more money, you need to know how to get your clothes clean. Depending on where you live, you could either have your own washer and dryer, or, if you live in an apartment building, there may be a set of coin-operated washers and dryers for tenants' use. Second, sort all your clothes into piles: (1) Whites; (2) Light Colored (Grey, Pastels, etc.); and, (3) Dark Colors (Blacks, Reds, etc.). After you've done that, make sure you further separate the clothes that are made of heavier fabric like denim. You need to separate the whites and light colored fabrics from the dark because sometimes, especially with red clothes, the pigments still leach out of the fabric during washing and may stain your light colored clothes. You need to separate heavier fabrics because heavier fabrics require heavy-duty spin cycles, which could damage your delicate clothes. Each pile is a separate load.

Lastly, put each load into your washer and use the buttons on the top to choose your settings. Each washer is different so for this, you'll need to look at and read the labels on the buttons. Most of the time, they're self-explanatory. Generally, unless you haven't done your laundry for weeks or if you have a lot of clothes in a particular color, you'll have small- to medium-sized loads. Whites should be washed in hot water, light colors in warm water, and dark colors in cold water. Add the necessary amount of detergent, bleach, and fabric softener. Most washers have special receptacles for these so make sure to take a look in your washer for this. Never put bleach in with colored clothes. And then just wait for the washer do the work for you.

Once you've done that, all you need to do is either put the clothes in the dryer with a dyer sheet, set the time, and you're good to go.
