Foley Catheter | Can It Solve Your Urinary Problem?

Urinary problems are getting common nowadays and they are affecting both men and women widely

. It is commonly understood that this problem is faced by men and women who are older than 40. This perception is not 100% correct because young people can also face urinary problems just as older people.

Now, some of the problems that older people face are, but not limited to: benign prostate, enlargement, incontinence, etc. However, one important point to note here is that even though older people face these problems commonly, they are by no means normal. This is why there are a lot of treatments available to cure the urinary problems and one of the treatments is catheterization using a foley catheter.

Foley Catheter Usage:

The shape of a foley catheter is like a narrow tube. It is inserted into a patients bladder to ensure that the urine is drained properly. What keeps the catheter firmly in its place and prevents it from losing it position is a balloon that is attached at one end and it is filled with sterile water. An outlet device helps drain urine easily in order to test it for problems like: kidney function, crystals, infection, etc.

Since you may leave foley catheter in the bladder for a long period of time, it is also known as an indwelling catheter. The good thing about foley catheter is that you can use it to treat several physical problems, like:

- Urethra obstruction - when an anatomical obstruction of the urethra occurs that leads to complexity in urination. It can happen because of prostate cancer.

- Urine retention - It can easily lead to straining while urinating, reduced size of the urinary stream, the feeling of an unfinished urination.

- Urine output monitoring - It happens when there is an injury

- Collecting urine for diagnostic purposes

Are there Any Risks Involved?

Foley catheters are known for their usefulness in terms of treating urinary problems. However, there are a few precautions that both patients and their doctors should know to avoid any problems from occurring. Some of them are:

- Infection - If you do not sterilize it properly, then it may lead to an infection. If the foley catheter is placed for a long time, then this also increases the chances of infection.

- Balloon breakage At the time of insertion, the balloon can even break.

- The urine is meant to flow into the bag with foley catheter, but a problem may even stop it from flowing into the bag.
