Follow Guidelines For Homecare After Dental Implant Surgery
After a patient receives dental implants, we strongly him or her to follow these
essential homecare guidelines in order to ensure the long-term success if implant surgery.
In order to control any minor bleeding that one may experience, apply moderate pressure with gauze pads or a clean, moist tea bag wrapped in a gauze pad.
Patients should limit themselves to calm activities for 3-5 days in order to keep their blood pressure stable and to minimize bleeding.
If the patient normally wears a removable denture or partial denture, he or she should follow any additional instructions we give you about wearing it during the healing process.
People should not use any tobacco products for a minimum of 24 hours. They should also tobacco as much as possible for several months. Tobacco is the leading cause of dental implant failure due to the fact that it slows healing and increases the chance that your body will reject the implants.
If the patient experiences an increase in bleeding or any heavy bleeding, he or she should call us immediately. If pain or swelling increases and continues beyond two or three days, the patient should call the office.
The patient should also call the office if there is any reaction to the medication, or if the dental implants begin to show through the gums.
The patient should avoid chewing until all numbness has worn off. If the dentist has placed a temporary restoration over the implant, the person should avoid chewing for one half-hour in order to allow the temporary cement to set.
During the first 24 hours, patients need to drink plenty of liquids and eat soft, nutritious foods. They also need to chew on the side of the mouth opposite the implant area.
After 24 hours, one can return to the usual diet. However, the patient should continue to chew on the opposite side of the mouth. Do not eat hot or spicy foods until gums are completely healed. We'll evaluate the situation to determine how soon it is safe to chew on the dental implant.
Brushing and flossing
For the first 14 days, gently wipe the dental implant site with gauze or a cotton swab. After that, use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently wipe the area. Flossing should be avoided for four weeks. We will evaluate the healing and adjust your brushing and flossing timetable as necessary.
In the meantime, however, brush and floss natural teeth as usual.
If we have recommended a mouth rinse, use it as directed.
Should any antibiotics or other medicines be prescribed, patients should continue to take them for the prescribed period of time. They should never stop taking them even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone.
To control discomfort, take pain medication before the dental anesthetic has worn off completely. Use pain medication only as instructed. Be aware that it is normal to experience some discomfort for several days after surgery.
To reduce discomfort or swelling for the first 24 hours following surgery, use an ice packs over the implant area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
To reduce discomfort following the first 24 hours, apply moist heat.
To further minimize discomfort after the first 24 hours, the patient can rinse the mouth very gently three times a day with warm salt water. We recommend using one teaspoon of salt per glass of warm water.
