For Americans, these early games mean waking up as early as 7:30 in the morning on the east coast, 6:30 in the Midwest, and 4:30 in the west for the first game of the day! That requires some true dedication, but as soccer becomes increasingly popular in the U.S., more and more diehard fans are willing to set their alarms and root for the U.S. and their other favorite teams.

And now that they have satellite TV, they can catch all of the games in real time. Obviously Americans will want to see all of the U.S. games. The American team is pretty stellar these days, and has as good of a chance as any of going all the way to the final match. But it can be fun to get into the spirit and watch the other teams face off as well, especially to gauge what kind of competition the Yankees will be facing later down the line!

And what better way to get into the spirit than watch all of the matches? Americans can form attachments to foreign teams for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you spent a semester in France during college, and have a soft spot for the country's team. Now you can watch the France vs. Mexico game in high definition. Maybe they think that Leo Messi guy is kind of cute, and want to make sure to see him in all the Argentina games. Maybe your grandmother is from Ghana. Now you can use that satellite TV to get the Ghana vs. Australia game on your new flat screen TV.

What's more, while your average cable or network channel will switch to baseball as soon as the latest soccer game is over, Americans with satellite TVs can watch all of the replays and hear all the commentary. This can be especially useful for those who are just starting to get into watching soccer, and could use a little insight on the sport's strategies and key players and figures.

It can be fun to watch the celebrations, too. Like the Olympics, the World Cup happens once every four years in a different location around the world. Though it is less popular in the United States, around the world it is the athletic event to watch like the World Series and the Superbowl combined. Entire cities shut down for a month in Europe and Latin America, as their countries' teams vie for a chance to make it into the finals. It can be heartwarming to see the patriotism that sports fans around the world feel for their native teams, a small reminder that people are the same across political and geographical boundaries, across oceans and time zones. This is just another way that the brand new world of international media connects people through common experiences, such as watching your home team kick some butt.
