Following Computer Ethics in the I.T Department

Whether you are a highly trained professional or a trainee in I.T, you must adhere to computer ethics in the workplace. Computer ethics like any ethical practice is a set code of behaviors you must go by, not doing so can cause harm to others and get you into trouble at work and with the law. Computer ethics are produced and regulated by a number of organizations, including The Computer Ethics Institute (1992) in America, as well as governments around the world. Although they have mostly not been altered since the 1990's they still all apply today even though technology has altered since. Here's some of the most relevant ethical issues with computers today.

Copying Software

Over the last decade illegally copying software, CD's and DVD's has become somewhat of a norm, yet, it is still illegal to do so. Gaining any software without paying, which you do not have permission to copy or use is unethical as by not paying you not returning the deserved respect the creator deserves essentially you are stealing his or her intellectual property.

Intellectual Property

Taking any other person's creation and naming it as your own is unethical, as it is someone else's intellectual property. In copy write and intellectual property ethics this means the output is theirs alone, and crediting it to yourself is essentially stealing.

Hacking

From hacking into back accounts to user ids, it is all still unethical. In the work place, there are usually a number of computers or a network with multi-user ids and hacking into these is a violation or ethics and privacy rights. Hacking can get you into a lot of trouble as it is essentially breaking into a computer which has purposefully been made to be private.

Data Violation and Destruction

To deliberately tamper with, manipulate or destroy any data that is another's without permission is unethical, as it causes deliberate harm to that user. If you also corrupt data or steal personal information, you have not only broken the code of ethics, you have in fact broken the law.

Viruses

Today, we spend most of our lives trying to avoid the dreaded virus that destroys or tampers with your computer. To cause harm to a computer on purpose, whether it be just to a software program, data or the whole computer, without authorization is an illegal action and under the Computer Misuse act in the U.K warranties imprisonment or great fines.

Understanding and maintaining good computer ethics will not only stop you from getting into trouble with the law, it will help preserve computer technology as a safe place. Knowing this code of ethics will help any professional or trainee for certification understand that protection of computers and the data they hold is vital in a work place where private information is held.
