Football Coaches Need To Get A Perspective

Two recent events have occurred that caused me to want to do a little rant on college football coaches. First, Brian Kelly accepted the Notre Dame head coaching job very shortly after telling his team that he was going nowhere, in other words, that he was staying with them. Then Urban Meyer announced his resignation only to change it to a leave of absence in less than 24 hours. I believe that these football coaches, and many others, for that matter, need to get a perspective. I know that many will say that loyalty is a thing of the past. They say that these guys have to look out for number one, no matter what. But I dont see why they cant look out for themselves and their family AND also act with integrity. Take the case of Kelly. When he was hired, he described it as his dream job. If that was the case, then when asked the question about whether he was staying at Cincinnati or leaving, why didnt he answer honestly? Why tell his players that he was staying? Even if he wasnt in the middle of discussions (which he probably was), there is a better answer he could have given. What is wrong with saying that if Notre Dame came calling, he would have to consider it? I believe that his players and everyone else would respect him more for that, than for the way he handled it. Or he could just say that he wasnt going to discuss that right now. But the bottom line is that he told them something that he knew wasnt true and now we all know it. Then we have the case of Urban Meyer. I still dont know what exactly the specifics were that initially caused him to resign. Was it health, family issues, just general exhaustion? Doesnt matter really, he has a right to his privacy. But when I read about his reasons for changing his mind about resigning, something just didnt sound right. I mean, because he saw the team having a great practice, now everything has changed? I could also go back to Nick Saban when he left the Miami Dolphins, but I wont. I just believe that coaches owe their players, their bosses, and the fans of their team more honesty. Maybe Im nave, maybe I am too old fashioned, but I do believe in honesty, integrity, and loyalty. And I think that football coaches arent the only ones that do this kind of thing. They just happen to be the ones I am ranting about today. This would help some of this, maybe not all, but definitely is a step in the right direction. About the Author:
