Football Trophies: Foreigners In England's Premier League
. No wonder football has become the world's favourite sport. For years, England's clubs have been known as some of the most influential in the sport, having lifted a lot of top football trophies. They are also keen hirers of foreign talent, with the largest number of foreigners among Europe's leading leagues. Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Ramires and Andrey Arshavin, to list a few, all play in England's Premier League.
England's 'big four' is all owned by foreigners, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Some of the owners were attracted by the prestige of what is considered the most popular league in the most popular sport in the world. Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea from Chairman Ken Bates for 140 million pounds back in 2003. Since then the club has won a number of football trophies, including the Barclays Premier League, the League Cup and the FA Cup. He invested large sums into buying players and updating the club's infrastructure and wanted to receive the return on his investment in the form of top football trophies rather than profit.
The most successful Premier League club 'Manchester United' was taken over by American Malcolm Glazer in 2005 who sold famous striker Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for 80 million pounds in 2009. The club is now managed by Scottish-born Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful coach in the history of British football. Liverpool FC was bought by American businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks for 470 million pounds in 2006. The club is considered a strong domestic and European force and has already won 7 major football trophies, including the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, three League Cups and two FA Cups.
London-based Arsenal was the last of the 4 leading clubs to come under overseas control. It is valued at 741 million pounds. American property magnate Stan Kroenke clinched the deal in the 2010-2011season. He now owns 63% of shares and wants to make an offer for the rest of the club. It is the third club with the largest number of Premier League titles after Manchester United and Liverpool. The club has a young high-flying team and a modern 60,000-seater stadium that is believed to bring more profit than any other sports venue in the world. Until recently, it was the only English-owned club out of the 'big four'. The multi-national team worth hundreds of millions is expected to win many more football trophies next season under a new coach's supervision. French-born Arsene Wenger is known for his calm and measured demeanour and has presided over more matches than any previous Arsenal coach.
Football has global appeal in terms of attendance and participation. There is hardly any professional club that hasn't ever bought foreign players or coaches. The top four clubs of England's Premier League are no exception, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. All of them are currently owned by foreigners and have a lot of overseas players in their squads, which makes this popular sport truly international.
