Footdee The Quiet Little Fishing Village That Sits By The Beautiful Aberdeen Beach

When visiting Aberdeen and falling in love with its warm sandy shore and even the

fierce wind that can get quite piercing at times, it is simply a must, to stroll into Footdee and take in the details of its intriguing setup and array of buildings and quiet atmosphere. For a fishing village near the sea, it is unusually quiet and the houses are a little difficult to differentiate as to what purpose they serve for the diversity of construction of these is quite astonishing. There are granite cottages, timber built sheds with generations of reconstruction, miniature houses with well kept gardens which the architecture clearly pointing towards adaptation to the coastline with low inward buildings, pitched roofs and chimneys built to keep the sea gulls away.

This delightful cluster of charming tiny houses can be easily missed from the Aberdeen Beach. However in spite of its small size, a certain amount of planning seems to have gone into the design of the village. Out of the three squares of Footdee, two were the concepts of John Smith a prominent architect in Aberdeen. North Mission Square Hall, fondly referred to as the scholie by the locals, is used for religious and other general purposes and is situated in the north square. In addition, throughout the village remarkable items that relate to the villages fishing history can be found such as model boats, fishing weights, ships in bottles as well as a life belt from Thermopylae which is the fastest sailing boat in the world constructed by the Aberdeen white star line in 1868. It is suspected that Footdee got its name for its location at the foot of the Aberdeen Harbor. Out of the original fishing community, very few are currently residing in this calm little village.
