, you might want to consider truck driving as a new job. Truck driving job is one of the most in demand job now and in the future, many companies are looking for truck drivers to work for them and they are offering highly competitive salary for qualified drivers.
Truck driving don't require high educational attainment, just few weeks of training on truck driving and passing the test after will be the starting line of your journey. If you are not familiar with truck driving but interested to enter the industry you might be interested on the things like how you can be trained and get a job in trucking, how a day to day life of a trucker looks like and of course how much you can earn from truck driving job.
In this article, we will just be focusing on drivers who want to dive class A equipments. When we say class A, we are talking about a tractor with one or more trailers attached to it which can be hooked and unhooked. Uni-body trucks are not included with class A category like school bus, dump trucks and the likes.
In order for a driver to drive a commercial class A equipment, one must have a class A CDL or Commercial Driver's License from your state of residence. CDL can be obtained by attending a CDL training school, finishing the course and passing the tests after.
There are different types of CDL schools you can choose from. Many state community colleges offers a CDL training, there are also private and independent CDL training schools and there are also large trucking companies who operates their own CDL Driving Schools.
Most of the time, companies who operates their own driving school will allow you to loan for your tuition fee. This usually comes with an agreement that you will be working with them for a certain period of time and pay for it through your monthly salary. This system is also used in some independent driving schools. That's how much trucking companies are willing to give just to find truck drivers.
In this kind of system, you also need to be careful because if it happen that you are not able to finish your schooling or was not able to pass the tests, you are still liable for the amount that was spent for the tuition. Same thing when you are not able to finish the contract with the company.
During your CDL training you will be able to know the things that a truck driver should know. Usually training programs is divided into classroom training and the practical or road training. In the classroom, you will be able to learn the things that will help you pass the written part of the state CDL test. You will learn the safety measures and the pre trip inspection procedures, things about air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials and others.
On the other hand, practical road training will teach you how to maneuver a huge vehicle, gear shifting, turns, lane changes, highway driving, parking and driving under different road conditions. The training is challenging but with practice many are able to master the skills.
Once you have finished the training which usually takes just about 3-4 weeks, you are required to take a state CDL tests. After you have passed the test you can now have your CDL and are ready to start a job on trucking industry.
As a beginner, you will need to undergo certain period of time before you can really go and drive alone. Usually, company will put you in a mentorship period which takes about 3-6 weeks. During this period, you will be working with a mentor and will help and show you how the trucking job works in the real world. Mentorship period will give you an opportunity to improve your skills, learn how to handle your items, and many things; typically it will teach you how the system really works including time management that will allow you to deliver on time while complying with the law with regards to number of limits of driving hours as imposed by the Federal Government.
Now, you might be asking, how much can you earn from driving. Compensation package for truck drivers are great. The amount that you can earn will vary on the type of job that you have. Usually, those who drives long distance earns better as compared to those who just drive locally. It's just that they are usually away from their home for longer period of time. And also those who drive on tandem or with a partner also earns higher since they can accept more jobs and drive longer distance.
At first you will just be earning small amount of course, since you are just a beginner but as you stay longer in the industry and are able to build a good reputation as a safe driver, your salary will also increase significantly. As an average, truck drivers usually made between $30,000-$100,000 per year again, depends on the nature of your job and of the effort that you put in.
