For Eyes, Acuvue Contact Lenses

There are two types of corrective eyewear people with vision problems have to choose from: eyeglasses and contact lenses

. Leonardo Di Vinci has been credited with the invention of contacts; however he only experimented with how a person's eye reacted to being placed in a bowl of water. Today there are Acuvue contact lenses to correct a person's vision, help protect their corneas from the sun's ultra violet rays and to change ones appearance with colored lenses.

Several glassblowers gave the small corrective lenses a try, but were unsuccessful because most protruded too far and made blinking the eye nearly impossible. Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick, a German ophthalmologist created the first successful contact lens back in 1887. He experimented with the curved shapes that rested on the rim of the cornea and put them in his pet rabbits first and then in his own eyes. But again, they were made of heavy blown glass and could only be tolerated for a couple of hours at a time. This is a far cry from the 30-day extended wear lenses people use today and the 'breathable' style which allows air and fluids to pass through the small round discs.

A combination of plastic and glass were melded together to form the first commercial contacts in 1936. They were lighter and better tolerated then the heavy glass lenses of the beginning days. It was in 1949 that the first lens to actually curve to the cornea came out and could be worn for up to 16 hours a day.

In the 1950's and 1960's came a very expensive contact lens and thus contact lens insurance was also invented. Contact lens insurance became an obsolete item in the early 1990's when the contacts became disposable and less expensive. Insurance is not a necessity for contacts because even though they are still expensive, they are relatively easy to replace.

Because the cornea needs to have air and natural fluids from the eye, and this was basically closed off with the older, hard contacts, several hundreds of people developed infections and disease in their eyes because their eyes could not get what they needed to function properly. It was in the early 1970's that the FDA or Food and Drug Administration approved the soft style lenses for distribution in the US. With these types of lenses, more people were seeing clearer and there were less infections.

It wasn't until 1972 when a British optometrist was given the paten and credit for introducing and inventing the first disposable lenses for the eyes. His name was Rishi Agarwal and his lenses were far less expensive then those that came before his. Millions of people started switching to a new way of seeing the world, through corrective contacts instead of glasses. Although, there always will be, people who can not 'stick something' in their eye because they do not like the pressure or various other reasons.

According to several sources, there are about 125 million people world wide who wear contact lenses at any given moment. Approximately 13 million of these contact wearers are people from Japan and around 38 million of them are located in America. Japan and other countries are more likely to see prescriptions for the harder contacts while the US has seen more prescriptions for the contacts of the softer kind. Nearly all contacts, no matter where they are manufactured or distributed, come with a thin layer of UV protection coating against the harsh suns rays.

Acuvue contact lenses offer a variety of different lenses for corrective sight. There are also some contact lenses that will change a person's natural eye color to something different and even change the shape and appearance of the eye. The contacts that change the shape of an eye are popular in Japan and of course, in the entertainment industry. Whatever contact lenses a person chooses, they should make sure they have the UV protective coating on them because corneas need protection from the suns harmful rays at all times.
