Meditation has a very specific meaning which distinguishes it from several synonyms such as reflect

, contemplate, ruminate and think. People who learn to meditate are able to concentrate deeply on a single subject, achieving control over the mind and depth of understanding that is quite distinct from contemplation.

A person who is walking or running slowly along a road can be lost in thought and reflecting so deeply that he might, like the philosopher, fall into a hole. However, such deep thought is not meditation. There is too much noise with the wind blowing and surrounding objects competing for attention, so that deep mental stillness becomes impossible.

High flying academics are often distinguished by their capacity to think with single minded purpose about a literary or mathematical problem that besets them. This mental concentration may seem like meditation but it is not because it is more likely to stimulate the mind and make it restless. However an important aspect of meditation is that it calms the mind, so in this respect intellectual focus is very different.

Diverse religions use meditation as means of prosecuting their purposes. However, in itself the practice of meditation is not the preserve of any one religion. Religion and meditation may have the same outcomes but it is not necessary to subscribe to a particular religious dogma in order to learn how to meditate.


It seems to be realized instinctively that spiritual freedom is achieved through material and physical privation. In meditation it is often useful to repeat a mantra or symbolic sound such as 'aum' in order to focus the mind. In religion chants and prayers play their parts in aligning the mind and spirit with particular aims. In repeating a mantra and allowing the mind to free itself of distractions new forces flow in to the mind.


The words 'know thyself' have been found inscribed in ancient religious temples, particularly in Asia. This is something that is a possible outcome of meditation and is part of the peace and calm that is sought through the practice. In order to acquire such knowledge discipline must be exercised. It is well known that suffering and hardship season the soul. Meditation may have the same effect, but without damage.

People who have practiced meditation for some time often begin to experience health benefits. This may not be so surprising in light of the fact that it probably helps to reduce stress by widening the individual perspective and helping him a person to get priorities in the right order. It is well known that stress is one of the prime reasons for ill health, so stress reduction and good health should fit together logically.

People who wish to learn to meditate need determination and courage. That is the case with any enterprise that demands discipline. The allocation of time may be a problem for busy people with many demands and challenges facing them. They have to make it a priority to set time aside every day to do nothing that is directly connected with the solution of pressing problems. However, once the art has been acquired the benefits may become apparent and the time spent worthwhile.
