For Some People, Disasters Are Temporary, While Others Will Suffer For The Rest Of Their Days

Several years ago while living in the UK, I decided to take a trip abroad for three weeks

. When I returned home, I was greeted by an empty house, and when I say empty, I mean it was completely bare. Everything had gone, including all my clothes, mounted pictures etc.

The house was so bare; it looked as though it hadn't been occupied for ages. I immediately assumed the landlord had had me thrown out, although considering I had been renting the place for many years, I couldn't think of a reason why. After a quick phone call to him, he arrived at the house and couldn't believe his eyes. I just had to accept the fact that the place had been broken into, so I went ahead and called the police.

They drew up a report and told me to give it to my insurance company. That's where the big problem lay, in that I had never bothered with insurance. I was on my own, and to say it took the best part of ten years to replace everything would be an understatement. Carpeting had been ripped up, curtains had been taken, together with all the furniture, much of which belonged to the landlord.

There were a few broken windows and several holes in the walls which we only discovered later. Fortunately for the landlord, he had home insurance, and it wasn't long before repairs were being done, and some furniture was being replaced. This episode was to a great extent nothing more than an inconvenience to the landlord as he was adequately covered. I on the other hand ended up suffering for almost ten years.

So many home owners think they'll never have a house fire, and that their homes will never be damaged because flooding, but these aren't the only things which can cause extensive damage to your home. In fact, approximately 60% of homes which are broken into end up being vandalised as well.

The landlord mentioned above was lucky because that damage only amounted to a few thousand pounds, and of course he was also covered, in that he had home insurance, and also contents insurance. The damage caused by vandalism can amount to thousands and thousands of pounds, and without adequate cover in place, you'd be the one who has to foot the bill. Can you really afford to do so, considering you more than likely already have several monthly outgoings? If your home got raised to the ground because of a fire, could you seriously afford to rebuild it without any financial assistance?

Contrary to what you may believe, home insurance doesn't need to cost you a small fortune. In fact, it's never been as affordable as it is now. Not only are you able to find low cost insurance, but if you do a little research beforehand, you'll soon discover that there are several measures you can take in order to drive those prices down even lower than they are already. If you don't yet have insurance, you should start looking about in earnest, particularly if you own the property you live in.
