Then, you have to think about the necessary equipment that is involved for a trip. This can admittedly be quite pricey. Scuba diving requires a lot of gear, and perhaps more than any other activity.

At minimum, you must have a mask, snorkel and fins. You can either buy your own or just rent them at the resort. It depends entirely on how serious you are. If you plan on scuba diving at home after the trip, it will be wise to invest in your own equipment, as this will save you money.

Now that you know what is involved, there is a way to avoid this whole process - go to a location that does not require scuba certification. Most places do require certification. However, there are certain locations in popular resort areas like the Bahamas and Mexico that do not. Therefore, if you want to bypass the certification process, this is an option. However, keep in mind that this is somewhat dangerous, and if you are not certified, you are definitely taking a risk.

To save money, make sure you go during a non-peak season, and preferably avoid the weekends as well. Generally, late fall and early winter will net you the lowest prices.

The bottom line - scuba diving travel can be expensive when you factor in the costs of getting certified and buying equipment.
