For all models having a good portfolio is essential, as any model agency will tell you. At a casting session models will have just a few minutes to create the right impression with the casting director, creative director or magazine editor putting together the shoot or commercial.

In some cases models have to watch as the person deciding who gets a well paid job will just flick through their "book" to decide who will get the work on offer. So, what makes a good portfolio?

Any model agency will tell you, you need to start with a good headshot. This is a classic, close up picture of the face which creates an immediate impact when the book is opened. It's worth taking time and trouble to get this picture right by having lots taken and then working with your booker to find the one that not only shows you at your best but catches your personality.

Models then need a variety of photographs showing things such as different expressions happy, in love, sultry and serious amongst others. Modelling is largely about acting and being able to summon up the right emotions on camera when asked to do so is essential.

A good portfolio will also contain pictures of you alongside other models. Casting directors and others like to see how you react with other people can you appear to be in love or flirtatious on the one hand, or seem like a doting parent on the other? Can you look as if you're having a good old laugh with a group of close friends?

A mix of editorial, in other words magazine fashion shoots as well as commercial, in other words advertising campaigns is also essential.
