Ford Crate Engines, The Best Replacement For Unusable Engines
For the sake of auto enthusiasts who wish to replace the unusable, blown out or worn out engines of their cars, Ford crate engines are offered by the Ford company, who are known to present a bouquet of solutions to almost all necessities related to automobiles. These engines save a lot of money for these car buffs because if they wish to go for the original engines, they may have to spend a lot more than these crate engines.
When the engineers start working on Ford crate engines, they know pretty well that this job must be taken up as a target-oriented job because they should aim at achieving a specific level of horsepower and torque. The first step they must take is to list out the components that are required for achieving these levels. The components must adhere strictly to the durability requirements of a great engine. Only those engineers who have rich experience in building high performance engines can succeed in this. This is a process that has been perfected after many attempts have been made by engineers on innumerable occasions. Hence this can easily be called as a time-tested process. Once the engineer develops one or two engines using this process, these engines are sent for dynamometer lab testing and break-in. This testing is necessary for maximizing horsepower and involves assessment of torque, fuel distribution, best cam timing and best ignition timing. Suitable changes are made if the target performance is yet to be achieved or if the engineers feel that there is a scope for improvement.
A lot of trial and error evaluations are carried out using different carburetors, camshafts, intake manifolds and cylinder heads. Once the desired torque and horsepower are achieved, the engine is again tested for durability by running it for several hours. Durability tests involve many steps including running the engine for 50 hours or more at wide open throttle and full power. Cycling tests like accelerating the engine from peak torque to peak power and decelerating it to peak torque and repeating these cycles for many hours are also carried out. The market application of the engine is the guiding point for durability tests and cycling tests. Only after satisfactory completion of these tests, the package is used for production.
Ford crate engines are available either as big blocks or short blocks. High performance parts are used and suitable modifications are made in them for giving increased horsepower and torque. In the 351 Cid model of engine, the horsepower is 410 and the torque is 417 foot pounds. 9:1 is the compression ratio. Other features are high flow heads, hydraulic roller cams and a 3.5 inch stroke cast crank with 4-inch forged pistons.
The 520 Cid are high performance engines that are very much suitable for trucks, their horsepower being 625 and torque being 600 foot pounds. The compression ratio in these engines is higher at 9.8:1. Other features include super cobra jet heads, mechanical roller cams, a 4.3-inch stroke cast crank and 4.390 inch forged pistons. Additional features are Victor Jr. intake manifolds and rear sump oil pan.
