Ford's 2010 Expedition Expands Its Engine Options

Ford has equipped the latest edition of the popular Expedition XLT EL sport utility vehicle with a flex fuel engine for 2010

. This 5.4 liter Triton V8 has the ability to burn unleaded regular gasoline or E85 fuel or any combination of the two. E85 fuel is 85% ethanol and 15% regular gasoline.

The 5.4L V8 has three valves per cylinder to give extra breathing capability and expanded horsepower. At 310 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque, the Expedition has towing capacity that many SUV drivers desire. Paired with the smooth shifting six-speed automatic, this vehicle promises ride and towing power.

Experts reviewing the 2010 Expedition were not overwhelmed by the acceleration provided by this engine. Heavily loaded inside or with a heavy load behind, the acceleration rated a 7 out of 10, but all of the reviewers still found it a useful towing vehicle overall.

Fuel economy is not a subject SUV drivers find a lot to brag about, but a 14 estimated city miles per gallon and 20 miles per gallon highway is better than most in the class. For example, the Escalade 6.2 L rates a 13 mpg in the city and Toyota's 5.7 L Sequoia rates an 18 mpg on the highway. Add to that the reduction in miles per gallon any E85 burner experiences and one can see that this vehicle is a work horse, not a gas saver.

Given the fact the SUV drivers often find themselves in the country, possibly away from sources of E85, flex fuel is a must. The V8 engine that can run on any blend of fuel is useful wherever the hunter, fisherman or camper roams.
