Fordyce Spots Condition - Mistaken Identity Skin Conditions

Fordyce spots condition can sometimes be confused with other skin conditions

. Some of the more common ones are pearly penile papules, Angiokeratoma of the scrotum, and genital warts. To recognize the difference, you have to understand what Fordyce's spots are to begin with. This extraordinarily common skin condition is actually a buildup of sebaceous sweat glands. It is harmless and occurs in ninety percent of men and seventy percent of women. The condition presents as small white to cream/yellow bumps that are about one to three millimeters in diameter. Upon discovery of such spots, patients should always get checked by a doctor to make sure that it is not a more serious condition.

Another skin issue that presents similarly to Fordyce spots condition is pearly penile papules. These papules, or bumps, show up in the genitals, the most common place for Fordyce's spots. However, they are typically whiter in appearance. They are simply skin outgrowths, rather than sebaceous glands. Like Fordyce's spots, they are benign. However, they are much less common, appearing in eight to forty-eight percent of men. These bumps typically appear on the rim and head of the penis while Fordyce's spots are found on the shaft of the penis and the scrotum.

Fordyce spots condition can also be mistaken for Angiokeratoma of the scrotum. Angiokeratoma is benign like Fordyce's spots, but is caused by lesions in the outer layer of the skin. This results in tiny red to blue marks on the skin of the scrotum. How common this is exactly is unknown, but it is thought to be very normal. Angiokeratoma can also present in females in the vulva. Related conditions also show up in other areas of the body. The lesions can appear as a single one or in groups just like Fordyce's spots. The major difference to remember in telling this condition apart from Fordyce's spots is the color.

Many people who find Fordyce's spots on their genitals are scared that they have genital warts. Unlike the non-contagious, benign nature of Fordyce spot condition, genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease that is very contagious. It is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Genital warts present in men and women in the genital area, anal area, and in rare cases in the mouth. They show up in clusters and can grow quite large in comparison to Fordyce's spots. They are also darker in color. They can look like bumps or small stalks.
