Forensic Dentistry in India is a science which is developing fast and is seen as a great advantage for the society
. The need of Forensic Dentistry in India has seen an increase in demand in last decade as the demands from criminal system of justice has increased.
Due to the instrumental role that forensic dentistry plays in most cases it is of utmost relevance that the individual wishing to seek education in this subject must be trained in the most appropriate manner. Oral pathologists are given the responsibility of training the experts in forensic dentistry as well as in solving the forensic cases which involve usage of knowledge in normal development, function and morphology of the oral tissues. They can also deduct any variations in pathological states if incurred. An understanding of the histological issues related to several dental treatments and there procedures along with the ageing in the physiologic process are also easy for professionals.
Forensic Dentistry in India has not yet caught on with the development with the other parts of the globe because of low confidence seen in oral pathologists when it comes to forensic cases. This is partly due to inadequate training and exposure to advancements in the field along with lack of exposure in the practical aspects of the cases. It is foreseen that the demand related to forensic investigation will tend to lead to an increase in scope of forensic dentistry in India. A three phase plan is recommended in the implementation of the continuance of this science in India.
First phase must include an undergraduate program which must have lectures on Preclinical forensic odontology improved by the clinical training. Also should be underlined some detailed program which ensures exposure to several case studies of forensic dentistry. The teachers should also be experienced enough to have the capability to teach their students issues related to forensic dentistry.
Second phase of the program must involve a structured program for postgraduate training to be developed with clinical exposure accorded to various specialties including oral pathology along with microbiology. A postgraduate trainee should develop knowledge in order to present proper reports to the department of police. The trainee should also know the art of record keeping, computers usage, criminology, forensic photography and legal jurisprudence.
Third phase of the program must also project the required postgraduate certificate and diploma courses which may be undertaken in order to get initiated in the field of forensic dentistry. Also several renowned dentists have suggested establishment of dental labs as well as referral centers both at district and centre level in order to improve the conditions and capabilities of forensic dentistry in India.
An efficient team of dentists may be compiled which has experts belonging to various branches involved in dentistry, who must work in association with other experts of forensic sciences to solve the cases. India has a large pool of manpower as well as talent out of which there will be students who are interested in the branch of forensic dentistry.
