Forget Social Security

There is a lot of uncertainty today about the future of our social security system. The many issues that surround this topic almost make it seem as if we are supporting a system that is only doomed for bankruptcy. The average age in the United States and most technologically advanced countries is almost 80 years old. That is almost 10 years older than it was when this system was started. The birth rate has had a steady decrease for 12 years and is at its lowest level since national data have been available. And the population has nearly doubled since 1970. These are just some of the main arguments that are mentioned when discussing this issue. We will discuss these and attempt to look at both sides of this topic.

Americans living longer than ever causes a potential issue as the younger generations must maintain the longer living retirees. Advances in technology and medicine has made life easier, healthier, and more forgiving of bad health habits as they find more cures for many illnesses. How can a population with a shrinking birth rate maintain a generation with the highest birth rate? On the other hand, if you consider the fact that the older workers are also the higher paid workers, now that average life expectancy has changed, shouldn't the average retiring age? If our minds are open to this possibility, this is just one of many ways to find a solution rather than just being focused on the problem.

Having a steady decrease in our birth rates for 12 consecutive years, raises the question, will we have a workforce sufficient to maintain our older retired population? Common sense will tell us that slimmer workforce will have difficulty maintaining the heavy load that the baby boomers will become as they retire. Thankfully, the social security system was not based on common sense, and though all the potential problems in the future were not foreseen in the beginning, a new problem can be an opportunity to make things even better from a more informed position. And if the numbers are as claimed, we can just simply look at it as a phase that the system will have to live through but then afterwards, we will have learned to adjust the system accordingly in order to make it work.

Another issue that should be mentioned when discussing this topic is that the overall population is increasing. The world population has nearly doubled since 1970 from about 3.7 billion to about 6.8 billion so though birth rate may be decreasing, actual births are not. Even in the US, the overall population has increased significantly from about 205 million to about 310 million. This alone tells us that though we may have the baby boomers retiring and living longer, we have a more populated country with more workers than before to contribute to our social security system.

As members of a society, we have a social responsibility to take care of the elderly and make sure they have their needs met. At some point they were the ones caring for us, directly or indirectly. Whether or not social security will be able to provide for us in the future, should not be of concern to the youth as they should be taking their future into their own hands and make their own plans for their future since we are being warned of these possible issues. Life for our generation will be very different from previous generations and our current generation is trying it's best to prepare the youth for this new ever changing future. The bottom line is, rather than focusing on the problems of the social security system, we should be looking for solutions. And I am sure that the people with this responsibility will do their best to overcome any challenges that arise from shifts in population.
