Forming A Successful Band

Every aspiring guitarist needs a serious band to play with in order to grow as a guitar player and eventually get noticed

. Unfortunately finding the right musicians to form a band with can sometimes be really hard and time consuming, so many guitar players end up making compromises and forming bands involving people that dont really have many things in common in terms of ambition, personality and musical taste. This almost always results in the band disbanding after several months or even earlier, so you must simply accept the fact that compromises and having a successful band are mutually exclusive.

To form a successful band you must firstly know as many musicians as possible. This way you will be able to choose from a wide range of people, which will allow you to experiment with different lineups and replace people when you see that they dont get along. Now this doesnt mean that you have to act like a boss who commands and fires his employees. Exactly the opposite your band needs to carry the spirit of mutual friendship and understanding. Thats why at first place you must contact musicians that perceive life just like you do. This means teaming up with people that have a similar way of life and point of view.

The next step is to sit down with these people and discuss all the tiny details concerning the future of your band. What are your ambitions? Do you want to get big or just play for fun? What music genre are you going play in? Where are you going to rehearse? Will you rehearse in order to prepare for live shows or in order to prepare for recording sessions or both? Whos going to write the songs? Who will invest money? And even: What guitar tuning will you play in? These are all important questions and not having a clear answer on any of them means compromise, tension and inevitable disbanding of the band, sooner or later.

Last, but not least of course, comes music skill. You may have found the greatest people on Earth, but the worst musicians well, that wont work. After all youre going to make a music band and not a philosophical movement, at least not only. 3-4 rehearsals are usually more than enough to get a good idea of how well each of your band mates handles his role in the band. If you see that someone really has a lot more to learn, youd better replace it with someone else, because he will only slow your progress down. Yes, it sounds a bit ruthless, but it wont be if you do it the right way. Have a conversation with the person and explain him that you admire his personality, but he has a lot of work to do music wise in order to fit the band. If he is really the person you thought he was, he will understand you and wont have any hard feelings against you.

As a conclusion, you can see that forming a successful band is a difficult task, but be sure that it is totally worth the time and efforts. After all its much better to be in only 1 successful band for 6 years that to change 6 sloppy bands within 1 year.
