Myth #1: Usenet is tightly controlled by its owners

Contrary to popular belief, Usenet is not owned or controlled by a single entity or company. Rather, articles and posts are propagated by users. There is no one that frequently monitors or controls what is said on the newsgroup itself. Some newsgroups do employ the use of moderators. Moderators are long-time users who maintain the integrity of the newsgroup. They do this by ensuring that the posts are relevant and deleting them if they are not. However, the moderator does not own the group itself.

Myth #2: Usenet operates under very strict rules and guidelines

Because Usenet is not run or operated by one individual or company, it technically does not have any rules. However, each newsgroup will have its own set of FAQs and etiquette procedures. Users are advised to follow these guidelines while they are participating in a group. Examples of etiquette conventions may include not typing in all capital letters, citing sources and staying on-topic. While these are not strict rules that must be followed, users are advised to adhere to them. Doing so helps to keep newsgroups informative and easy to navigate.

Myth #3: Usenet is strictly academic

The most common misunderstanding about Usenet is its purpose. Though it was originally created for academic institutions, it was not meant to be solely academic in nature. Instead, Usenet is a great way to collaborate, discuss and even debate current topics and events. Users can get advice and read opinions on topics ranging from academic to entertainment. With more than 100,000 newsgroups, Usenet discussions cover nearly every topic a person can imagine.

Myth #4: Usenet is full of advertising

Some individuals may go on Usenet with the intention of advertising their products or services. Though this is something frequently done on the Word Wide Web, it is rarely tolerated among Usenet users. Any user who wishes to advertise should refrain from doing so on Usenet. Not only are their posts likely to be deleted by moderators, they risk being blocked from the newsgroup itself for posting irrelevant content.
