Four Things To Consider Before Getting A Winery License To Serve Alcohol In California
Securing an alcohol license California wide for a Winery in California is definitely
something that you should be considering, because it can potentially add greatly to your bottom line profits.
Here are four considerations you should bear in mind when looking to get a winery license in California:
1. Explore the specific type of license that you need
There are a variety of choices and so it would certainly be true to say that one size does not fit all. If for example you have a bar in your winery where you may also want to serve hard liquor or beer (perhaps as the end point for a tour of your winery for example). Then you are going to need a different license then if you only want to serve wine.
And again, if there is a restaurant attached to the winery and you want to also serve (or are already serving) food, then would need license type 41 to cover you for serving both wine and beer. But if you wanted to also serve hard liquor then you would have to get license type 47 which would cover you for all three types.
2. What about the local zoning requirements?
Within California itself there are considerable differences when it comes to the local municipalities and how they view and license alcohol. These are usually referred to as Conditional Use Permits (CUPs), and accompany liquor licenses as a basic requirement that you will have to see to.
3. How much are you willing to pay to get your winery license?
It seems as though obtaining a license to do anything should be relatively cheap, because no actual product is being created. It is simply a piece of paper that allows you to trade! And yet the truth is that liquor licenses represent both a big money making opportunity to local government, and often a source of grief because of the objections that are often raised to them being granted. So they are priced accordingly! (More on that below)
4. How quickly do you need the license?
One very common "trick" of approving departments is to drag out the process of approvals for up to a year for a "standard" application, with the dangled carrot of an expedited process if additional fees (which are often double the initial fee) are paid.
Be prepared then for the fees on your application for a winery license to stack up rather quickly, especially if you need to get approval quickly.
Equally, the process of transferring an existing license can also be a long and drawn out one, and there are many pitfalls to avoid.
