Fredericksburg's Oktoberfest

In Texas' hill country, one of the best times of the year is fall

. The sun is warm, the breeze is cool, and more people are spending time outside. October is a great month in the hill country and what a better way to get out and enjoy this splendid weather is the Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg. This year it is their 30th anniversary. Attending Oktoberfest is a great way to kick start the fall and celebrate Texas' German heritage in true Bavarian fashion.

Oktoberfest is held the first weekend in October starting Friday evening and lasts through Sunday afternoon. Festivities include a parade, music, various Texas artisans selling a wide range of goods, games for kids, and of course-great German food and beer. Starting Friday evening, Oktoberfest begins with the traditional parade around the market plaza, better known to the locals as MarktPlatz. Follow the parade to the grand opening ceremony of festivities and celebrate with the TubaJam band. On Saturday, bring the family down for a full days worth of fun and partake in the chicken dance around the square. On Sunday the 42 tournament begins so bring your teams and get ready to play.

One of the highlights of Oktoberfest, aside from awesome food and beer, are the various artisan vendors that come from all over Texas. Shoppers will find a wide range of unique items including handcrafted jewelry, pottery, art, stained glass, candles, wildflowers, wines, jams and jellies, and salsa.

Holy yodel! That's a lot of polka. If Texas is best known as the music capital of the world, then Fredericksburg might be known as the polka capital of Texas. During this weekend event, there will be three different music stages featuring polka bands from all across the state. Some of these artists include the famous Walburg Boys, Oma and the Oompah's, Havlak Batla Polka Time Band, and the Ennis Czech Boys. There will be dance performances by the Cadence Cloggers and Clickety Cloggers. Between the shopping, music, dancing, food, and beer, Oktoberfest offers something for everyone.

Ticket prices for Oktoberfest are $6 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12 (children under six are free) and two day passes are $10. Oktoberfest is located in the 100 block of W. Main Street. Head on out to the hill country this weekend and fill your tummies with brats, beer, and more.
