Free Fire Damage Advice

House fires are all too common and yet we never think that a fire can happen to us

. Certainly, we buy insurance to cover us in the event of a fire, but we never plan for what we might to in the event of one. If you've been the victim of a fire, there are several dos and don'ts that you should keep in mind as you start the recovery process.

Do call your homeowners insurance company right away.

The sooner you make a claim, the sooner the insurance company will send an adjuster out to evaluate the damage. This is the first step in getting your insurance claim rolling and to restoring your home to the way it was before the fire.

Do call a fire restoration company.

Fire restoration companies specialize in cleaning up fire damage and restoring items that were damaged in a fire. It is a good idea to call a number of them to get an idea of how much the repairs will cost. Your insurance company or your agent can also steer you in the direction of reputable fire restoration firms.

Don't attempt to enter the home until the fire department says it is safe.

Hot spots, burnt out electrical wires, and fragile walls and floors may make entering your home unsafe. Make sure that the fire officials have completely put out the fire and assessed the structural safety of the building before you attempt to enter the premises.

Do make sure that the power is shut off.

Burnt out or otherwise damaged circuits are fire hazards in and of themselves. Although the fire department may have shut off the power, please ensure that it is properly shut off before you do anything else.

Do open the windows to air out the area.

The damaged areas of your home (or the entire building, in the case of a full house fire) will likely still contain some smoke or smoke residue. You can mitigate against further damage by opening all the windows and doors to allow for proper air circulation.

Do make a list of all of your belongings.

Most homeowner's policies include coverage for personal and household items. Make a list of all of your belongings that were damaged or lost in the fire. Receipts will help the insurance adjuster assign proper value to your lost effects and a complete list will ensure that you are compensated as completely as possible for your loss.

Do cover undamaged furniture.

If any of your furniture escaped the fire without receiving any damage, you should cover it with plastic or some other non-porous protective covering. Smoke residue or chemicals left behind from damaged items may otherwise cause further damage otherwise.

Do remove undamaged items.

For the same reason that you should cover any undamaged furniture, you should remove any items that were not damaged in the fire. In addition, removing undamaged effects will make evaluating the claim for damages easier.

Don't attempt to wash the walls or clean damaged contents yourself.

Leave the clean-up to the professionals. If you attempt to do any of the cleaning yourself, you may inadvertently cause further damage to your property.

Don't allow your pets in the damaged area.

Smoke residue, chemicals left behind from burnt plastics and other items, and structural concerns make it unsafe for pets to roam through fire-damaged areas. Keep your pets out of the damaged building or damaged areas until they have been restored.

Fire damage repairs are probably the most important aspect of recovering from the devastating effects of a house fire. Notifying your insurance company immediately and finding the right professionals to remediate the damage to your property will go a long way to help you come back after a fire.
