In every class there are several types of students

. Some students are always ready to participate actively, some are shy to speak, and some students are really not able to understand the subject. But no teacher wants low participants in the class. There are many reasons for the low participants. The vital goal is to increase the participants in the class and to create an environment for giving an opportunity to learn. This makes the class to explore issues and ideas in depth from different point of view.

Mainly the participation of the students in a class depends upon how the relationship elaborates in between teacher and students. To reach this goal, teacher will need to do some extra steps to encourage the students to speak up.

The teacher initially tries to create a friendly environment from day one of the class. Teacher arranges the room in the way to encourage them also make the students seating in the form of circle or U, confirms that students can able to see and speak to each other. Explains them the importance of participation and makes them clear from the beginning what her expectation is. Another important thing the teachers need to do is to memorize the student name. Students are more attractive if you make conversation with them as individual, rather than in the group that too by calling their names.

He / She makes good plan to increase the students participation, assigns one or the other responsibilities to the students. Questions them and also gives them some guide lines to increase the participation which will help them to reach the goal. Teachers should always try to choose different type of teaching methods that includes the discussions and small group work. Teach the class in the pause way means 15-20 min then ask some questions then continue the class. This methodology refreshes the students mind, rather than continuous class for 45 min.

Listening and responding is one of the main aspects in the class, give student some time to think and formulate their answer before giving the response. If the time passes or if the students give a puzzled look, reframe your question. Never give answers to your own question until they try to answer your question in all possible way. Listen fully to your students questions and answers, dont interrupt them in middle. Create an encouraging environment while they answer. Encourage the students to respond with each other, means make the other student to answer your question rather you give the answer. Also encourage the students give their ideas and use them whenever you can.

There are so many common reasons why students dont participate. First one is repetitive content. Students may get bored to hear the same topic several times, but it may be necessary. In that case ask the students, what they know about the topic and ask them to write on the board. And allow them to teach each other, encourage them to do interesting activities like write test for each other ect.

The second common reason why students do not participate is may be the subject is too hard. Because of this problem half of the students especially the older students fear to ask the questions. In these situations adapt some other methods like allow the anonymous questions like put the question box and ask the each student to write the question. And allow them to work with each other.

Also keep the students busier than you, give them worksheets, activities and projects. And dont sit idle, you should busily move from students to students or group to group, correcting, evolving or providing feedback. Having students in group is one of the best ways to increase the student participation. And final thing is to allow them to have a chance to raise the voice and ask questions.

If you try this way, you may be surprised to see the increasing number students who just might join in!
