Free Internet Access - Can I Get It?

When Did Free Internet Access Start?

When Did Free Internet Access Start?

The free Internet concept was born during the dot com craze in 1998. Within a few short months, a multitude of free ISP's had jumped on the bandwagon. Some of the more notable names included, NetZero, Juno, FreeWWWeb, Freei, WorldSpy, and Kmart's BlueLight.

How Did It Work?

Most free Internet services used a floating advertising banner that was fixed on your computer screen while you were connected. A few even required you to periodically click on banner advertisements or be disconnected. The concept was that advertising revenues would offset the cost of providing the free service and eventually become profitable.

How Was it Marketed?

FreeInternet.com spent over 89 million dollars in venture capital marketing its free Internet service. FreeInternet's advertising campaigns included a popular TV commercial featuring NBA basketball star Shaquille O'Neal. Kmart also spent millions of dollars marketing their BlueLight free ISP service via their large network of retail stores.

The Downfall of Free Internet Access

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and free Internet access was no exception. By mid 2000, virtually all free ISPs had either closed, filed for bankruptcy, or discontinued free service.

Did Any Free ISPs Survive?

NetZero and Juno bought up the remaining assets of several now bankrupt free Internet companies and continued to offer advertising supported free Internet access. Later, NetZero and Juno merged and became United Online and began to limit their free services in an attempt to drive customers to switch to their paid plans. When this article was published United Online's NetZero still offered 10 free hours per month.

Are There Low Cost Alternatives?

The simple answer is yes, There are several low cost Internet service providers offering unlimited dial-up Internet access plans for under $10 per month. Basic ISP is very inexpensive at $6.95 per month.
