Free Prescription Medications For Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disease that causes scaling and inflammation (pain, swelling, heat, and redness). Skin cells grow deep in the skin and slowly begin to rise to the surface. This process is called cell turnover, and it takes about a month. This can happen in just a few days because the cells rise too fast and pile up on the surface. Psoriasis is considered a non-curable, long-term (chronic) skin disease.

Psoriasis often causes patches of thick, red or pink skin with silvery scales. These patches can itch or feel sore. They are often found on the elbows, knees, other parts of the legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet. But they can show up other places such as fingernails, toenails, genitals, and inside the mouth. The areas are raised and dry. It tends to be more common in areas of trauma, repeat rubbing, use or abrasions. Many people report improvement in warmer months, climates or increase in sunlight exposure. Psoriasis is often hard to diagnose because it can look like other skin diseases.

Psoriasis occurs more often in adults but can be seen in people of any age. Most commonly patients are first diagnosed in their early adult years. Family history plays a role in many cases. Certain genes have been found that are linked to the disease. Psoriasis affects both men and women at about the same rate.

Psoriasis starts in the immune system, mainly with a type of white blood cell called a T cell. T cells help protect the body against infection and disease. With psoriasis, T cells are put into action by mistake. They become so active that they set off other immune responses. This leads to swelling and fast turnover of skin cells. People with psoriasis may notice that sometimes the skin gets better and sometimes it gets worse. Things that can cause the skin to get worse include:

Infections, stress, weather changes that cause the skin to dry, and certain medicines.

For mild psoriasis that involves only small areas of the body (like less than 10% of the total skin surface), topical (skin applied) creams, lotions, and sprays may be very effective and safe to use. Often powerful anti-inflammatory drugs are the most frequently prescribed medications for treating mild to moderate psoriasis. They slow cell turnover by suppressing the immune system, which reduces inflammation and relieves associated itching. Topical corticosteroids range in strength, from mild to very strong. Low-potency corticosteroid ointments are usually recommended for sensitive areas, such as your face or skin folds, and for treating widespread patches of damaged skin.

Vitamin D analogues are synthetic forms of vitamin D which slow down the growth of skin cells. Calcipotriene (Dovonex) is a prescription cream, ointment or solution containing a vitamin D analogue that may be used alone to treat mild to moderate psoriasis or in combination with other topical medications or phototherapy. Other medications available for treating psoriasis are Diprolene AF which is for strong psoriasis and is a corticosteroid, Elidel cream, Kenalog which reduces the inflammation associated with psoriasis, Synalar cream and Temovate cream.
