Modern building needs cranes

Modern building needs cranes. In fact, civilised building has used cranes for over 2,000 years. The first physical evidence of a machine using the crane principle comes from Ancient Greek ruins, where the sites of temples have been found to contain parallel socket holes for a static crane presumably to lift the large, heavy lintel blocks and statues onto the corners of its pediments and tympanum. In effect, these static cranes were the first tower cranes (a tower crane is simply an upright crane that works with a boom arm at the top). The mobile tower crane followed shortly after, once people realised that all that lifting power would be extremely useful in a more portable form.

The problem with a static crane, as the post holes for them outside those Greek temples suggests, is that it needs to be built before it can be used. Thats a time consuming and even dangerous process building something tall enough to hoist huge bits of stone and masonry onto the top of unfinished buildings. Mobile cranes only need to be built once in the factory that assembles them; or, in the case of the Greeks, in a courtyard somewhere. Once a mobile tower crane has been made, it can simply be transported to wherever it is needed, stabilised, and set to work. The time and effort saved, from the second use of a mobile crane onwards, is incalculable.

Initially, mobile tower cranes were not capable of performing the same lifts as static cranes. Their mobility perforce made them a little lighter, a little less sturdy and, initially, subject to breaking under the buckling leverage force of a more than usually powerful lift. Typically (read the course of human history and one sees over and over that the urge to violence plays its part in most major inventions), it was the realisation that a mobile tower crane could serve as a weapon in times of war that caused strengthening improvements to be made to the basic frame. A siege engine was effectively a mobile tower clad in armour, used to lift troops and weapons to a level where they could affect maximum damage on an enemy stronghold. The principles by which the siege engine was strengthened led, in times of peace, to a greater facility, on the part of mobile towers, to lift even the heaviest items.

2,000 years on, and the mobile tower crane has bulked up so much that it can easily lift the same weights as its static brother. Its immensely manoeuvrable, with multiple axles allowing it to steer into even the tightest of city streets. As a result, it has become the weapon of choice for urbane construction sites, where it can be called in as desired and retired when not immediately needed. At a city site where space and access are both at premium levels, thats an invaluable addition to the flexibility quotient of a build.

The mobile tower crane, perfected in times of war, has built and rebuilt cities in times of peace. Its the builders equivalent of the Shire horse strong, reliable and infinitely well suited to the hardest of tasks. And, because it can be removed when not in use, its made building possible in spaces that were previously too awkward to use- a thoroughly modern engine.
