Freight Transport in America: The Golden Spike
Freight Transport in America: The Golden Spike
This week we're going to do things a little differently. We are going to rapid fire through the rest of the history of rail transport in the United States. We have been trekking through the history of freight transport and we've come nearly to the end of the line. We'll cover rail transport this time and the rest of freight transport in the coming few weeks. So, without further ado, we'll pick up where we left off last time (the arrival of freight transport to the states). Now, we have covered a bit of this in the past, so some of it will be review, but for the most part it should be new information. Notepads and pencils ready? Alright, here we go.
In 1826 the first line of rails in New England were laid in Massachusetts. About 3 miles we laid in that first endeavor. This is a pretty big moment for freight transport in America, so take note! The first westbound railroad in America was built in 1827 and ran from Baltimore to Virginia. All of this was before the advent of the steam engine, so people were getting pretty creative with their modes of propulsion. On this railway, they attached a sail to a carriage to give wind power a try. Later they used horses, but not like you might expect. They actually had the horses walk on a kind of treadmill, which turned the wheels of the carriage. The first steam locomotive to be used in the states was the Stourbridge Lion, an English built engine, but it proved too heavy to run efficiently. In 1869, one of the more momentous occasions for the American railroad occurred. The Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroad met at Promontory Summit in Utah. A golden spike was driven into the ground marking the crossing of the continent. At this point, freight transport via rail had truly arrived.
In our last blog post we looked at ltl trucking and the important role it plays in the freight transport industry. There are a lot of instances where time and budget constraints require that something beside a full sized trailer be used for hauling specialized loads of freight. This is the where ltl trucking can really shine and its impact can really be seen. We're midway through our look at the various aspects and types of freight transportation, and we've started to uncover a lot about the industry itself. Today we're going to jump back in and look at the wonderful and wide world of heavy haul trucking.
