French Language Learning Software - Too Many Choices?

If you are looking for French language learning software you're going to find yourself under an avalanche of alternatives

. A recent search of Amazon turned up more than seven hundred French CDs and DVDs and that's without the French downloads available online. With prices from a little over $10.00 to over $600.00, how are you supposed to make an informed choice?

Let's face it, software companies are pretty good at marketing - most of us at one time or another have bought software based on the advertising material only to be disappointed with the actual content. Whilst I'm not suggesting that's true of all French language software, we both know that a good portion of it isn't going to be what you are looking for.

The question is, how will you know without shelling out? Will ten or fifteen dollars get you anything more than very basic French lessons that you can probably get online for free? At the other end of the range, does six hundred bucks guarantee you get the best around?

Fortunately there are plenty of review sites around and you can get independent opinions of French language learning software so you don't have to rely on the companies own marketing. It's not foolproof, of course, but a quick read of a few pages of site should give you an idea of whether the comments are genuine or not. If in doubt, move on. There are plenty more websites out there where you can get good information.

If you asked me for a personal view I would say that it's quite impossible for anyone to choose "the best" from 700 plus alternatives. I doubt anyone on the planet has been through them all!

On the other hand, if you can find a site from someone who can clearly demonstrate a decent command of French and they have a particular favorite - or a short-list of a few - it is at least worth considering their advice.

Bottom line? French language learning software is available in virtually any style, to suit any pocket. If you can get one with a recommendation you feel is trustworthy, supported by a money-back guarantee (now available with some French downloads) then that's probably as good a place to start as any. There's no risk and a decent chance of coming up with precisely what you were looking for.
