French Macaroons: In the United States

There are many misconceptions when it comes to the French Macaroon, or macaron as it is known in the United States. This is due to the fact that numerous people are interchanging macaroon and macaron, when they are two totally separate desserts. So, what are they?

A French Macaroon and what is referred to as a macaron is the exact same thing. According to the Macaron Store website, a French Macaroon is, "a meringue-based sandwich-cookie confectionary made from egg whites, almonds, and granulated and confectionary sugars. After cooking, the outside of the macaron has a smooth, egg shell-like crust with a light and moist interior. Two macaron cookies are then put together using a cream or a jelly, to create one French Macaroon." We do not call them French macarons, because that would be similar to saying, "Today I purchased an American USA flag." Macarons are understood to be of the French variety.

Today, we commonly refer to a macaroon as a small, single cookie created from egg whites, sugars, almonds, and almost always coconut. Sometimes you can find macaroons dipped in chocolate or other flavorings.

Times are changing as you used to only be able to eat French Macaroons as soon as you purchased them in the store. However, with advances in modern technology coupled with the availability of rapid shipping, we now have access to order French Macaroons to be delivered at our doorsteps overnight!

French Macaroons have developed drastically throughout time. When they were first being made many years ago, your only option was a single, boring, plane-jane cookie that came in only almond flavor. Today you have an unlimited selection of flavors to choose from. Stores are even making Green Tea, Latte, Cheesecake, and other flavored varieties. Whatever your favorite taste is, chances are that they are available for purchase!

If you have not tried a French Macaroon, look around online and try to find a shop and a flavor that you think you would like. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with this tasty desert!
