Frequent Feed Back Speeds Golf Skill Learning

A new golf swing skill requires regular feed back. While a single golf lesson will give you insight into your weaknesses and the correction it seldom results in permanent swing changes. Consistent feedback keeps us on track. When we rely solely on feel or ball flight for what we are doing our perceptions can mislead us. Our awareness of the postion of the club or our body parts is often incorrect. Feed back by a experienced knowlegable instructor is crucial.PGA Master Professional Dave Cahill, at the Cahill Golf Schools in Palm Springs Ca, instructed students on how to perform a specific hip rotation during the golf swing. The students received a demonstration, performed the feel of the rotation with the instructor, and were able to verbally describe the correct hip rotation. The students were then recorded performing the motion with a high speed video camera. Students were recorded performing the motion until they were certain they had performed it correctly. The videos subsequently revealed that none of the students performed the motion correctly. However, additional instruction with repeated verbal, visual, and feel oriented feed back from both the instructor and the video camera resulted in correct performance. Research on physical skills learning has repeatedly shown the importance of frequent visual, verbal, and feel oriented feed back. Unfortunately training aids offer limited benefits as a source of feedback. Research has shown that over time students learning a new skill with a training aid compared to students learning without a training aid learn at the same rate. Studies do show that using training aid during the initial presentation of a physical skill speeds up learning. For example the initial use of auditory feedback to alert golfers of a correct position is helpful. Continued use of the training aid beyond the initial presentation provided no benefit. Two companies have recently introduced auditory feed back devices for learning. They are Kvest and Advanced Motion Measuremnt. Each has developed wireless biofeedback sensors.Scientific research has not been performed using these specific devices as they relate to golf. Exisitng motoer skills research would indicate that initial skill learnig may be ehanced using these tools. The best learning takes place through long term ongoing feed back provided by a knowledgeable instructor. The feedback can come in the form of visual demonstrations, video feed back with expert explanations, kinesthetic or feel oriented movement descriptions, verbal explanations, written explanations or a combination of all.
