From A Can Of Spray Paint, A Portrait Of A Player

The man with the black Sharpie in his hand was eyeing the golfers on the range Sunday but it was not an autograph he was seeking.

Mr. Totem is a graffiti artist who has spent the week at the Tour Championship creating portraits of the players using cans of spray paint. His work space is a perch several yards from the practice range, where he draws the outline of a player with his Sharpie and then breathes life into the sketch with his spray paints.

At 11 a.m., Totem started to draw Hunter Mahan, who entered the final round tied for the lead with the Australian Aaron Baddeley. Two hours later, the painting nearly was finished. All that was left to do was to fill in Mahans right hand, which was holding a club.

Totem, who said the signs and benches and buildings of Atlanta were his first canvases, has found a respectable outlet for his talents in his commissioned works. All of his pieces from this weeks tournament will be signed by the subjects and then donated to the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

As Totem was making his final paint strokes on the Mahan piece, his subject was taking his final swings on the practice range. Totem stopped and watched Mahan make a swing and then looked at his painting.

Looking at him, I need more shoulders, Totem said. That guys big.

He found his can of red spray paint and added bulk to Mahans shoulders. Earlier in the day, he said, Mahans wife, Kandi, had approached him asking if she could buy the portrait of her husband.

Asked which golfer best fits his style and personality, Totem mentioned someone who isnt in the 30-man field.

Probably young Rickie Fowler, he said. Because we both do our work kind of flamboyantly.
