Large cities need a good plumbing system. Washington DC Plumbing, for instance, is a great example of a complex system of pipes, valves, pumps and reservoirs. We use these networks of pipes and pumps to provide our homes with water to cook, drink and clean.

Plumbing is not a recent area of expertise. It has been used in rudimentary ways since the Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations but in a much smaller scale. The Romans were probably the civilization that invested the most in it providing aqueducts and drainage to their growing cities, especially their largest Metropolis, Rome.

Plumbing is both an old and a new invention. Cities have created ways of providing running water to their homes and to get rid of waste since the time of ancient cities like Ur and Nineveh.

However these systems do not resemble in size or efficiency the current demonstrations of engineering skill. Plumbing as we know it began when cities began to grow and grow. Attracted by the lure of jobs and a better quality of life, thousands and thousands of workers came in from the countryside and started to accumulate in cities. These cities struggled to provide the bare necessities to their citizens with their old fashioned drainage and water supplying arrangements.

Plumbing is often used along with many accessories like taps, showers, boilers, toilets, bidets and other elements that increase the comfort and efficiency of the system. A whole multimillion dollar industry has been created around this industry providing everything from garden hoses to luxury rain showers.

Plumbing is part of a number of construction and a basic element of our everyday life. Imagine having to haul your own water and having to dig a hole in the ground every time you need to use the bathroom. Now plumbing provides all kind of amenities like cold and hot water, cold and hot ventilation, and an excellent waste management solution that works so well we rarely even think about.

In regular homes the plumbing system is divided between hot and cold water and drainage. This used to require separate pipe systems that were previously made of different materials, like copper and lead. However, with the invention of PVC plastic both waste and water supply systems (cold and hot) are made of this durable and resistant material. The only difference being that drainage pipes are much larger. The next time you think of Washington DC Plumbing, or that of any other city you might want to think of the benefits it provides us that no other generation has enjoyed to this degree in history until now.
