From Broken Glasses To Lasik, It's Been A Great 85 Years
Doctors in Japan saw potential in radial keratotomy almost 85 years ago
. The concept of radial keratotomy, commonly known as Lasik in Minneapolis and elsewhere has been around for a long time. A doctor by the name of Fyodorov, in the former U.S.S.R was treating a small boy who had fallen and a piece of his broken glasses had cut into his eye. The miraculous part was the boys eye was not hurt, on the contrary, the damage was minimal, only the outer layer of the surface of the boy's eye was shaved off in the fall. Before the fall, the boy had been nearsighted, after the fall, his vision had improved.
Dr. Fyodorov, fascinated by this development, began to study the matter. This doctor used a procedure where multiple incisions on the anterior surface of the eye where made using a steel surgical blade and a standardized formula for correction. He witnessed improvement in the vision in his patients.
The procedure was brought to the United States in 1979, it was basically the same procedure Dr. Fyodorov was having success with in Russia. While not perfect, it did decrease dependency on glasses. Computer programs have led to more specified surgeries with different nomogram patterns to correct varying degrees of farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism.
Fast-forward thirty years and Lasik in Minneapolis and elsewhere throughout the country is alive and well, benefiting millions of people. The procedure has been around longer than most people realize, it has gone through a series of perfecting and fine-tuning. The question that first come to peoples minds is, "is it safe"?
Safety is always the first concern, especially when it comes to your eyes. You would rather wear glasses for life, than do something that could cause permanent damage to your vision. If you read the FDA website, you learn that any medical procedure inherently has risks, but they are minimal. In the hands of a qualified, experienced surgeon, Lasik is as safe as it is effective. It is also brings peace of mind to know that in all the extensive FDA studies, no patient has ever suffered profound vision loss.
The risks are minimal and the results exceptional. People who have been nearsighted or far sighted all their lives now have 20/20 vision. Astigmatisms are no longer a problem with Lasik in Minneapolis or anywhere else. In fact, Lasik can actually improve astigmatisms during the same process as vision improvement.
For 85 years the process or radial keratotomy has been studied, perfected, utilized and helped millions of people to see without the use of glasses and contacts. From a boy with broken glasses to 20/20 vision for everyone, all because of an astute doctor with a little vision.
