. What started with the humble home foreclosure of ordinary Americans cascaded into a giant tsunami to bring about the fall of giants like General Motors. All are linked in a tragedy of woes. With one thing leading to another in a string of events pundits are left wondering whether the chicken came before the hen or vise versa as the pain of the country is intensifying. Did foreclosures lead to recession or is recession causing more foreclosures. Perhaps unemployment is at the root of it all? Questions are confusing pundits. Are leaving many without jobs to pay their loans. The goods market in real estate is also being harmed. While Nero fiddles Rome burns.

The fall of General Motors is taken by many to be the end of a capitalist utopia. For generations workers have been employed with this dynastic giant. Today unemployment faces about half a million Americans. It is almost like the end of an era. The fall of General Motors in the 21st Century can be compared to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in the 20th century.

In Detroit the automobile capital of America and across River Detroit in Windsor the car capital of Canada, thousands of families who have for generations worked for the car giants started to gasp as General Motors filed for bankruptcy. It came after the previous bankruptcies filed by Chrysler and Ford.

In Detroit and Windsor, for over a century, even before a child was born everyone knew about his or her future a place under the gigantic shelter of any of the three firms. It was predestined that after completing school the child would be trained in some department or other of the automobile industry and start a career by being an apprentice. There were also opportunities galore in the ancillary units dealing with supply that fed these auto giants. For generations this had been the pattern.

The parents, who tried to find careers for their children outside the auto framework, were looked down upon even if the jobs carried greater weight. They were thought of to be some sort of heretics by the community. The workers were of the view that it was stupid to hunt for outside-jobs when the three were responsible putting on the roads of this planet three out of a total of four cars. The lions share of the production was with General Motors it accounted for half the production.
